skills learning new techniques and perfecting old ones which soon became second nature to him. "Montresor I believe after months of training I challenge you to a Masonry duel." "I accept your challenge because you still do not know the ways of masonry like I do." The night of June 30th was the set date for our match. I worked painstakingly hard day and night practicing because I had my doubts about my own skills. Those doubts became reality when he bested me that night crushing my confidence. I knew that I had to earn it back or my favorite hobby would never be the same. I challenged him to another duel in two months time and he responded with "No need to beat a dead horse you can not beat me at Masonry anymore." I knew that if I got humiliated again I could never show my face in my hometown again, so I continued to practice.
"Nice bricks you imbecile" I would say to him when I saw him in the shop. My stress levels increased as the day drawer near to what could possibly be one of my last times practicing the art of masonry. I would wake up at dawn every day and head right to the Masonry shop to refine my skills. On this trip I would see Fortunato going into his shop to do the same brick and granite practices I would do but his work always was better than mine. I saw the beginning of the end of my career and I was not going to accept defeat. I quit the thought of besting him by playing by the rules. My mind began to race on possibilities on how to best Fortunato in a hopeless competition for me.
Then the idea hit me like the brick walls I create and then the process seemed as clear as day. I had to cause Fortunato's misfortune myself by changing his building tools for faultier ones that would not hold up their own weight. "My plan is bullet-proof!" I pestered my wife with all night as she continuously tried to say the flaws in it. But I wasn't listening to her because what does she know about masonry that I don't. I went to bed that night with a smile ear to ear because I knew that I had won a week in advance. The next dasy I saw my unknowing opponent in passing in the city as I was running errands. " Are you as mortified as you should be for the dual at the end of the week Fortunato?" I asked. " The fear should be in your mind not I, because I always have the upper hand on you my old pal." Fortunato chuckled. I grit my teeth as to not get to mad and stormed off back to my house. I knew that the win was inevitable for me so I stayed quiet and humble until the day of the dual. I woke up on the cold gloomy day in February ready to win. "When you see me next sweetheart I will be a new man." As I headed out towards the town center where we were to hold the match I saw my opponent to be. I hollered at him that today was the day,
"The day for your final defeat" he said slyly. My anger got the best of me after that remark that I decided to turn the competition into a bet. " Since you are so confident in your skills Fortunato how about we put up a wager on the impending duel." "A wager in what form? Money? Glory? Gold?" he asked. "No, even better, the loser must never pick up Masonry tools again and is to be exiled from this Country." Fortunato stared in awe for a moment then saying " I accept but I know I will miss my good buddy Montresor after today." I mosey my way down to the town center early so I can enact my plan for success. Masonry Competitions hold an important history in our town because the original founder of the city was a mason and popularized the duals as a way to settle differences between two parties. Knowing this I knew that there would be many bystanders watching the competition which pushed my will to cheat even further. As I was switching out his brick and mortar for limestone and Elmer's glue. "This isn't right, this isn't right" I repeated to myself as I continued my dirty deed. Twenty minutes before the match Fortunato and I walk up on stage and shake hands in front of the ever-growing crowd as my mind begins to race on everything that could go wrong. "May the best mason win" the announcer said followed by " As we all know all masonry duals have a wager tied to them, knowing this, Montresor what is the wager for today?" I told him the circumstance and he tells the crowd "Hmmmm… hefty wager for today folks lets get it started with the ceremonial changing of supplies." My heart sank, how could I have forgot, I had been dueling people for years and I forgot the most important part. "Good luck" I have muttered to Fortunato as he takes my brick and mortar while I take what were supposed to be his sabotaged supplies. The announcer counts down from ten as I accept my defeat. The duel starts and I try my best to build a wall but I can tell the useless supplies are not helpful in anyway so I call the match over within 5 minutes. As I walk up to Fortunato being surrounded by the estatic bystanders I see the one thing I can never forget for the rest of my life. My ex-bestfriend and my wife shared a kiss on top of the stage as all my happiness exits my body. I shed a tear and walk of the stage without saying anything to anyone knowing I had lost everything I loved in life to one man. I leave the country with vengeance towards Fortunato and I know he can not get away with taking masonry and my wife from me so I begin to plot. Humiliating Fortunato was not in the option since it always seemed to turn on me so I created a malevolent plan for the next year. I shall kill Fortunato whenever he least expects it and do so with bricks so he knows how he caused his own death. With this new plan ingrained in my mind I left the country for a year just waiting for the most opportunistic time to let it play out and then it came.s
