Foster Care System: Salvation or Detriment
Imagine your family being broken up and scattered to a random location with a random group of people that you now must live and grow with. This decision is completely out of your control and very well may be the most important one of your life. This is what is known as the foster care system. This is detrimental to American society, because “according to national statistic 40 to 50 percent of those children will never complete high school. Sixty-six percent of them will be homeless, go to jail or die within one year of leaving the foster care system at 18.” “80 percent of the prison population once was in foster care, and that girls in foster care are 600 percent more likely than the general population to become pregnant before the age of 21.”BRITTANY NUNN (2012), author of Statistics Suggest Bleak Futures for Children Who Grow up in the Foster Care system. These statistics depict that reoccurring cycle then develops trouble adults from innocent children and spits them out into the world as unproductive members of society. Not every child that is instituted into the system is going to be another failed attempt at giving a child a good life, in fact there are probably countless success stories that the foster care system has had, however the numbers do not adhere in a fair manner. Every kid should have the right and opportunity to live the life they want to. Most kids do not develop attached feelings to their families due to the non-biological relations. There are also some cases where the child may need more attention because of the harsh realities they have had to endure early on, yet in most cases they do not receive that and are starved of that , and look for other outlets, most of which are negative.
The foster care system is inadequate for the simple reason that these children and teenagers that are involved tend to fail much easier than that of a child with a full family. They do not have the right guidance and

They are unable to fend for themselves and have no support or resources to fall back on. I have learned that there is an exception to this that even I was unaware of, and that is that they are able to sign themselves back into the foster system as long as they are continuing education. However, this does not include those discharged from group homes still leaving many youth still homeless. The consequences are that these youth are homeless, jobless, have no support system and are then forced to do things to support themselves that may have legal ramifications. Littlefield (n.d.), “Foster care studies show that 25 percent of “aged out” foster kids must earn a living without a high school diploma or a GED. At least 20 percent of have been homeless and fewer than 20 percent are able to support themselves. Nearly a quarter of former foster care children are incarcerated within two years of their emancipation. Because they lack the support systems most young adults take for granted, aged out foster care teens are at high risk for substance abuse, domestic violence and poverty.” The gainers to this program are the teens and young adults that are able to benefit from the services provided. Another gainer is the federal system that funds welfare programs that these youth would be reliant on without help and further education. The…

There are many different steps that could be taken to better our system. The most important would be to hekp children deal with unresolved grief and loss. Yes our system does offer these children a new family that can fill the void of the one they have lost but unfortunately these children go through an individual type of grief, one that can only be understood by the children who have gone through this intense chapter of their life. Another crucial step towards bettering our foster care system is to guide children in building connections. When children feel anxiety about what’s going to happen to them and who’s going to be there for them—in essence, when they feel they don’t belong—it’s of the utmost importance to guide them in building connections. Unfortunately these children have lost the common skill to build solid and trustworthy relationships. It is important to help these children however…

Is foster care the best system to be using for the children involved? Since 1995 the amount of abuse and neglect related to foster care homes has tripled (Curtis 8). The fact that the abuse rate is so high means that this system should be improved so the children can feel more comfortable. Foster children have described their experiences as traumatizing and “the worst way to raise a child,” with description like that it is a wonder that we as a nation would allow them to continue experiencing these awful circumstances without intervening (Krebs 13). The reason we let this pass under the radar so quietly is because we cannot come up with a better way of handling the amount of children and variety of ages passing through the system. Even though this system is better than having foster children stay in state housing until they age out, the foster care system should…

Bad things can happen in foster care. There will always be situations where foster care wasn’t good for a child. But as I said before, if the child stayed in their original home they would probably be in a much worse condition than they are in foster care. Foster care can do amazing things too. It changes so many children’s lives for the better, and gives them a fairer chance for a better life. It can take them from an abusive or dangerous home and give them love and kindness in another family. So, I’ll end with a story of a girl whose life was radically changed by foster…
