Introduction In the book America, by E.R. Frank, presents a personal narrative of a man’s journey through the foster care system, and how it affected his mental health. The author’s major premise is to highlight the disparities in the foster care system and how those disparities affect the children’s mental health and future outcomes. The author’s point of view is to offer sympathy and empathy to the families involved and offer opportunities for advocacy and awareness. The author’s point of view is transferred into the content of the book to contribute to further learning and advocacy for change.…
The Legislation Policies and Procedures course has taught me a lot about advocacy, including why advocates are necessary for children. According to the article “Definitions and Reasons for Advocacy,” one of the reasons why advocates are important is that adults listen to adults, but do not always listen to children. The article "Foster-Care System Stretched Too Far" is an illustration of the consequences that arise when there is no advocate for children to ensure they are heard by adults. The case of Logan Marr mentioned in this article has forced me to consider how I would respond if a client disclosed abuse to me as well as the follow up actions that should be taken. In this course, I have also learned about ethics, especially the ones…
He informed everyone that we reached out to many organizations and some are willing to help with medical equipment and medications. Some of those companies are those that donated medications to us for the medical mission. However, we still need to spend money to buy some equipment and medications from our purse and we can do it; he then opened the floor for some QA/Suggestions on the proposal.…

Children are in Foster care for many reasons. For those reasons they are in there for days, weeks, months and or years. In the pie chart shown above are the places children end up in or prior to foster care. 51 percent of children go with their parents, 8 percent goes with other relatives, 7 percent goes with their guardian, 11 percent are emancipated and 3 percent left because of other options. Mostly, children are placed with parent or primary caregiver. The least amount of children are leaving because of other options. The chart demonstrates the appearance of where children go after being and or leaving foster care.…
“More than half a million children are in foster care in the United States today—roughly double the number who were in foster care in the mid-1980s, according to the Child Welfare League of America (Nakyanzi).” Kids being placed into foster care are kids who have been abused and neglected by their own loved ones, and instead of helping the kids mend the broken family, they pull them apart by sending the kids to foster home after foster home. Foster care was meant to help and protect kids from abuse and neglect that they were receiving at home; however, there are problems with the foster care system. With these problems foster kids often struggle with learning to be independent and some children even face mental and physical problems. Past studies…
“The social determinants are conditions in which people born, grow, live, work and age, which are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels” (Who, 2017). Within my agency the social determinants factor our client deals, resources, money and housing availability, since Broward county has a few housing available. In addition, for the housing that is available, most clients do not have the income to meet the requirement to get a housing. For example, a client might available month and sustain themselves to live in those high value decent apartments. The issues come with some Apartment might agencies asking for the first month, deposit, and last month rents together, making very difficult for…
Living is a harsh time and community wasn’t only difficult for the parents, but for their children. Kids were put on the streets and left to strive for themselves, leaving most to die or take up harsh jobs which in the end, could kill you. The development of orphanages, foster care, and mostly adoption from 1900’s until present day, helped children from living in a bad home or the streets to having a stronger and healthier life. Living in poverty is difficult but giving your kid a safe home is important. As orphanages slowly became scarce in our country, new and better ways of child support and care have been improved by foster homes and even better, adoption.…
What is foster care and why would kids be placed in it? Foster Care is where minors are placed in a temporary home with a foster parent or parents. The placement is run through the government or a social service agency. “Most kids go into foster care or go to a foster family because his or her mom or dad has a problem with drugs or alcohol.” (“Foster Care”).“Other children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect and placed in Foster Care.” (“The Future of Children”). People need to understand what foster care is and why kids have to leave their homes, before judging who or what the kids have been through.…
The number of children in foster care continues to rise each year, reflecting the flaws and problems within the system. It is a known fact that children who have been abused or neglected often have a range of unique physical and mental health needs (First Focus, 2008). The Massachusetts foster care systems seems to be struggling with the following issues: providing safe homes for the children, reducing the length of stay in foster care by increasing the adoption rates, improving the education system and health care systems for both children in and those transitioning out of foster care and a plan to provide adolescents with better life skills to foster independence after foster…
Foster Care is designed as a temporary service that responds to crises in the lives of children and families, giving the help that they need to have a happier healthy life. Most children develop a positive relationship with their parents as they get older to become a better person and do the same thing; giving support to other children who are willing to be a part in your family, like they are your own. You can have a tremendous impact on a child in need by opening your home and your heart. Foster Care takes extra care to place children in just the right homes and provides specific training and support to assist each child in developing positive social, educational and emotional skills and discovering their strengths and potential for future…
Usually, children are put into foster care because of child abuse, drug abuse, or another situation which puts the child’s safety at risk. Foster care may also be an option when a parent just can’t take care of his/her child because of a lack of money, or a condition, physical or mental, that the parent has. The kids can stay in foster care temporarily, and have the option of going back to their biological parents (Foster…
Initially, I wanted my research topic to be about the affects of foster care in adults. I was thinking about this topic because many of my friends, who are now adults, have been adopted or in foster care at some point in their lives. And many of them are struggling. A few have inadequate living conditions or are living on the streets. Another is struggling to stay in school. And a couple are on drugs. I wanted to know if these hardships were related in any way to that fact that all of them have been in foster care. I then wanted to know what are the chances of this happening to adults who have grown out of the foster care system. It is a personal issue because I know from experience how tough things can be for youth and adults who really do…
Millions of Americans rely on Medicaid for services to treat their mental health needs. Medicaid is the largest payer of mental health services in America and helps to cover an array mental health services. Children in the foster care system represent a significant amount of people that require mental health services throughout the county. These children are a concern because they are at high risk for behavioral health problems and are considered a vulnerable population. When it comes to economic issues, Medicaid and foster care children researchers have stressed the significance of interpretation for expenditures and services. “ Children in foster care account for a disproportionate share of Medicaid expenses related to enrollment. These…
