HERIOT WATT | Foundation of Al Jalila Children 's Specialty Hospital |

Abstract

This report is about the Site visit which took place on 10th Feb’13 to Al Jalila Children 's Specialty Hospital under the supervision of Ms. Elimra Nezamifar. The report will mainly discuss about the foundation of the building, and will enlighten how this type of foundation functions.

INTRODUCTION:-
The type of foundation constructed in the Jalila children’s hospital is piles and raft. Bored piles and raft is one of the most common form of foundation constructed in this part of the world. Bored Piles (figure 1) are constructed according to soil conditions of the area, in this particular building pile are constructed 20m deep in to ground for better support and hold. Rafting (figure 2) is done on the piles caps to support the structure of the building, in this particular scenario the rafting is done for 8cm using steel mesh and concrete.

BORED PILE FOUNDATION:-
Bored Piles foundation is one of the type of deep foundation, this type type of foundations go very deep in the ground surface for their bearing capacity to be affected by surface conditions, this is usually more than 8 meters below da ground. Deep foundation is constructed to transfer load deeper, more competent strata at depth if unsuitable soils are present near the surface.
Piles are long structure mostly made up of steel, these slender members that transfer the load of the structure soil strata of low bearing capacity to deeper soil. The length of the piles depends on the soil strength and conditions. Piles are also used to anchor the structure against the uplift force and to assist structure in resisting lateral and overturning forces. Piles are drilled

Soil is a non-homogenous blend of many materials. There are many factors that need to be considered when digging trenches in soil. To analyze the stability of unsupported trenches, the method selected will depend on the critical nature of the project, economics, and the amount of time available for design. For shallow utility line excavations, where time and economics are at a premium, a rapid technique for evaluating the critical depth and the maximum safe slope is required. The maximum safe slope is identified as the "angle of repose." The use of stability charts or tables coupled with a few simple equations is the most efficient approach.…

In the absence of electrical power and technologies, a great importance was given to environmental comfort. The interaction of different materials in different building elements was determined by the physical properties of these particular materials. With reference to the below sketch, one can see how the heavy external walls were constructed in an inner and outer layer of stone blocks; insulated with a core of peat and earth and waterproofed with clay. Turf was also used to absorb any excess retained moisture. The roof was based on a structural frame built using driftwood or whale bone, clad with timber coursing. Over the wood, layers of peat, grass and straw thatch were used for thermal insulation and waterproofing. The roofing materials were secured with a rope netting and weighted downwards using stone anchors.…

Light wooden framed buildings were originally discovered when light partition walls were capable of forming a construction system by themselves. The system consists of timber studs frames assembled on site and tilted vertically or horizontally depending and what is needed. The idea was improved and accelerated with the availability of cheap mass produced nails and properly planed and cut pieces of wood. The first step to building a light timber platform building is to lay foundation walls to support the house. On top of the foundation walls would be placed a sill plate and in-between them would be a layer of foam to make an air tight seal. The sill play is held to the concrete foundation using anchor bolts. Anchor bolts are designed to hook into the concrete. On top of the…

A trench fill foundation is essentially a deep strip foundation; a narrow trench is dug, with the width only slightly wider than the walls. The trench is filled with concrete to almost ground level. The advantage of a trench fill foundation is that because the trench is relatively narrow it reduces the level of earthworks and excavation time compared to strip foundations. This construction method is relatively safe, since the trench is…

The design is composed of interlocking sheet structure, aluminium foam insulation and plastic sheeting. In addition to that, the flooring is made of concrete and metal rubber layers. Therefor, it is appropriate for the families to use it as a shelter, but not appropriate for a school. The aluminium is not the best material to build the walls with. It transfers heat, so in the summer the school will be too hot and in the winter, it will be cold. It will not maintain a convenient temperature. Thus, this will not encourage the students to attend the classes. Also the material used in the design can be affected by some other natural phenomena such as, storms. This can cause death cases or it can increase the number of injured people. In this case the camp must improve the health care system also and the camp may not have enough support to make this…
