Four Different Types Of Disorganized Attachments

Research show that there are four main attachment styles: Secure attachment, insecure resistant attachment, insecure avoidant attachment, and disorganized attachment. Secure attachment is when children seek proximity to the caregiver when distressed, derive comfort, and effectively reenter the world of exploration. Next, there is insecure attachment styles were the child experiences can sometimes be detrimental —to prosocial development. (Gross 2013). An example of insecure resistant attachment is when the child is annoyed when a stranger is present, when the mother leaves the child is extremely distressed, but when she comes back the child is upset at the mother. In contrast, Insecure avoidant attachment is when the child is carefree. The child does not show a much emotion if the mother is in the room or if she isn’t. Insecure attachments are usually linked and thought to develop disorganized attachment styles because of trauma.Children who have experienced trauma of some sort are usually prone to disorganized attachments, which is characterized by the lack of a coherent strategy for regulating distress and maintaining proximity to a caregiver
