To remember the four main causes of World War I (1914-1918) is to remember the acronym MAIN (Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism). In the aspect of militarism, Britain had a large navy, which nations like Germany strived to have as well. Germany and France competed to build larger armies. It was an arms race, producing more weapons, larger military, and superior military technology. Unease between England and Germany led Europe’s nations to form alliances, coming to the other’s defense in the event of a war. Also, global competition for land caused conflicts in many places.
