Hello, my name is Janae Murray and my experiment is about seeing DNA without having to use microscopes. I chose this project because I am very interested in biology. I feel that learning more about DNA will allow me to understand how humans, plants, and animals develop. Understanding DNA is also a very important part of our existence.
DNA is also known as deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is a large molecule that carries genetic instructions used in the development of all living organisms, plants, and animals. DNA is why elephants give birth to little elephants, giraffes give birth to giraffes and so on.
DNA is found in a special area of a cell called the nucleus. Because the cell is so small and has so many molecules, the DNA is tightly packed. DNA is made up of chemical building blocks know as nucleotides. These building blocks are made of three parts: a phosphate group, a sugar group, and a nitrogen base. To form a strand of DNA, nucleotides are linked into chains alternating the sugar and phosphate groups.
Believe it our not, onions have more than twelve times more DNA than a human being. This doesn't seem logical because an onion is neither complex in it's genetic makeup nor smart. It is easy to extract DNA from an onion due to it's size and ability to peel it in layers. By chopping the onion, you are exposing and breaking down the cell membrane. The detergent is used to bring the cells out the cell membrane and the salt allows the cells to release the DNA. Once you add the rubbing alcohol, the DNA reproduces at a faster pace and doubles in quantity, making it visible to the naked eye.
In conclusion, I found out that my hypothesis was correct. It is possible to extract DNA from an onion and it can bee seen with the naked eye. Once the cellular component of DNA was broken down by the alcohol, the detergent allowed the actual DNA strands to rise to the top of the container. After letting my experiment sit for awhile, I
