Fourth Meeting Reflection
Journal 4 On February 29, 2015, we met for our fourth meeting. It was our first meeting where we had a smooth transition going into our new room. Our new environment seems to be helping members feel more comfortable as a group. First, our leader started out the group introducing herself and the co-leader, along with the topic for discussion, boundaries. Next, she explained that she chose to narrow our discussion to be only about boundaries in Social Work, rather than personal boundaries. Then, we did a check-in sharing briefly our story as to why we chose Social Work as a career. Hearing each person’s story seemed to facilitate a good connection among the members, exhibited by positive non-verbal communication. Subsequently, the leader directed

Because members were already somewhat familiar with one another, the beginning stage did not take too long as members all ready had some level of comfort with each other. I did, however, allow members the opportunity to briefly discuss what they wished to achieve from the group meetings. The members that did decide to discuss their concerns during the “introductory stage” were members that were employed at the employer the longest and that were on the brink of wanting to quit. I advised these…

Advocacy has played an important role in helping those individuals who do not have a voice, or who do not know where to turn when going through a difficult time. Advocates push to influence public policy and resource allocation decisions within social systems and institutions. Learning team A was asked to conduct an interview of a social services agency involved with advocacy. The learning team turned to a nonprofit organization named A.W.A.R.E. Inc. This organization was designed to help children and adults with behavioral disorders to reintegrate back into society. Within this agency is a woman who is a supervisor for staff but is also involved with another agency as part of her position within this nonprofit organization.…

There was the actual group leader Andre, and then there was a woman, Christy, who helped him lead the group and keep everyone on task. She also was the groups contact person, and filled out all the forms for peoples parole officers, help house leaders, etc. Then there were 3 or 4, depending on the night, members who wanted to be in control of the group. Two of them were actually beneficial to the group and provided them with helpful stories and commentary. Then there were the other two who just seemed to want to interrupt the group just to share something they thought was important, but not something that helped the group or went along with the group discussion. I think this was very challenging to the group overall, there was a lot of whispering going on while these members talked, whispers of “someone shut him/her up” “I can’t stand it when he/she shares” etc. I think that the assigned leaders should step up and quiet them down or try and get them into some type of individual counseling. It is a tough situation though because if they are asked to leave the group or quit sharing it may lead to a relapse or them just not attending meetings anymore because they feel unwelcome, and that is not beneficial at all. You could see that the leaders were trying to keep things on track and had subtle ways of trying to quiet a person, but it didn’t always…

I would like to start this report off by saying that I have never been to city council meeting before, even though my father was the mayor, and still serves on city council back in my home town of Kingsford, Michigan. I found this experience both interesting and exhausting to see and understand the scope of the council’s role and responsibilities in keeping this city running. All members of council must have to have a very extensive education and background in finance and public administration even in mid-sized city like Colorado Springs. I couldn’t imagine the business required in a major metropolitan city.…

After the introduction the minutes from the last meeting were read by the group’s treasurer, this was the first role I could identify in the group. The treasurer took the task role of facilitator. After the reading of the minutes the leader asked for comments. One member asked if there could be another vote on changing the meeting time from 5:30 pm to 7:30pm, she started stating why and the treasurer cut her off by saying we put that issue to vote last week and it was passed to remain 5:30. The…

The AA meeting I attended took place at Hackensack UMC Palisades on a Sunday evening at 7:30 pm in the evening. The meeting was held in a small auditorium and there were about 12 people in attendance, excluding myself. Among the 12 people, there was a women and 11 men. The ages of the people who attended was approximately between the ages of 30-60. Before attending to this meeting, I was expecting to go into a room filled with nervous and agitated people rocking back and forth. My impression of AA and of people with substance abuse mostly came from my own prior experience with population dealing from psychiatric disorders. I was expecting to see a lot of general nervous behaviors. It caught me by surprise to see that most who attended the meeting,…

On Friday, April 5th starting at 8:00pm I walked into St. Peters Catholic Church in Olney, Maryland to witness my first ever open AA meeting. The meeting was being held in the basement area of the church. The room was small and comfortable. The atmosphere was very welcoming and relaxed. A younger gentleman wearing a nice clean button down shirt and khakis, who goes by the name Andy, stands by the door and greets people as they walk in with a big friendly hello. It is then, that you are handed a name tag and a sharpie. Looking around, the furniture is rearranged to better suit the event and what is about to take place. The chairs are formed into a circle, so everyone can get a clear view of each person, it was large enough to fit 15 to 20 chairs but small enough to still be intimate. Before the meeting started, the room filled up with people who all looked very different but were all there for the same reason. The total amount of people that attended the meeting was 13. There were 3 females and 10 males. The group ranged in age from young to old. There were two men who were having a friendly conversation by the snack table, one older gentleman with noticeable gray hair in sweatpants and Harley Davidson t-shirt and a younger looking gentleman wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. There was lots of small talk going on as people found their seats. At 8:00PM the sound of everyone chatting with each other came to a stop when Andy announced that he was going to get started. The room came to a silence and the meeting was kicked off with a prayer. Everyone joined hands. After the prayer was said, Andy asked if there was anyone new joining. There were none. Following that, Andy read a passage from the “Big Book”. It looks just like a bible and the people attending this meeting treat it like one. As the passage was being read, a little more than half of the people were following along in their own copies of…

When I first learned that I would be observing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting, I had several ideas on how it would actually go since I have never observed a meeting on a student. I had pictured in my mind that the meeting would be in a quiet room with a really long table and it would be two groups, the parents and the student and the other group would be the teachers, negotiating a contract. I also had pictured in my mind that the meeting would be very confrontational with one side deciding on something and the other side arguing that this decision was not sufficient enough. Little did I know this IEP meeting I would be observing would turn out completely different than what I pictured in my mind.…

Session three was held in November I still had a sense of discomfort and felt very self-aware that this group is not for me. After the previous session I felt the group had no direction (Cole, 2003) and yet I decided to remain silent therefore contributing to the lack of direction (BABCP ). One member stated “I do not know what this group is” which helped me feel less isolated and at least one other member shared my discomfort. It seemed the more I attended this group the more confused I became. When the facilitators did come to me I had an immediate urge to run. When it was pointed out I had not been heard today I responded by saying “I am not here I am on the bus home” one of the other members said “it is OK to feel like this…

I enjoyed the section in Takakai where he talked about the assimilation of the Jews from Russia into America. Clearly they were a determined hard working people who scraped, struggled and fought for a better life from the moment they stepped onto American soil. What is interesting to me is the animosity that came their way from other Americans way once they “made it”. It seemed that their meteoric success and quick assimilation into the culture and lifestyle was threatening to many. On page 289 it says,…
