This probationary period begins with training at the police academy, a school where officers learn on-the-job techniques prior to receiving full police powers. Officers must train at the academy for up to 1,100 hours, and they receive full pay and benefits from the time they enter the academy (Grant & Terry, 2009). Training is rigorous, demanding and exhausting. It is also a rewarding life-changing experience. New officers learn how much they are capable of by succeeding at seemingly impossible challenges, both physical and mental (Joinlapd.com, 2011). While in the academy, the officer receives educational as well as practical physical…

Completing a field program and police academy is the final hurdle before becoming a full-fledged police officer. Each state and jurisdiction have its own requirements before joining their forces. In some states, it is as easy as the basic law enforcement training in the local community colleges and after basic training the recruits can apply to an academy of their choice. Moreover, other states require the fulfillment of in-house training and readiness program, followed by a successful completion of the recruitment program before joining. Before an individual can step out into the streets as a police officer it must go through an extensive training. The majority of programs are based on classroom learning by going through different real life…
When I joined the police department, I knew I wanted to be a part of something great. I wanted to leave a legacy and make an impression on others. I was the first in my family to choose a career in law enforcement, so initially, I was unaware of the challenges this career field came with. My mom was a teacher, and my dad worked in the printing business. Both were successful in their chosen fields, but they were blind to the demands required for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. To be successful, I would need to be observant of those around me who had found success. I would need to mirror their ways and incorporate their habits into my own. I would need to learn from their failures. Most importantly, I would need to learn what made them…

The police academy training also prepares police officers for active duty. The training probably has to be the hardest obstacle for me because it requires intense physical workouts. The first week in training I will have to run, and do calisthenics, which consists of push-ups, crunches, and jumping jacks. I will also have to use the medicine ball to do sit-ups, twist and hand offs, curls presses and extended workouts. Each week I will have to do the sets and reps for these physical workouts and each week the exercises double , so I will have to do double the work.…

Since I was a small child, seven or eight years of age, my desire to be in law enforcement has remained strong. I have expired the searching of other careers, and come up short. As I grew older, I consulted with those I respect, seeking their wisdom in my career path. This choice had not been fashioned lightly. I am convinced, at this point in my life, serving as a law enforcement officer is my calling. My ability to serve our community and nation, as a law enforcement officer, is a great passion of mine. I am compelled to serve those around me, by protecting the innocent and carrying out justice to the guilty.…
I wish to attend the Fairfax County Teen Police academy this summer, because I've always had the dream of becoming a police officer. I've always wanted to give back to my community by upholding the law and to serve and protect others. With the amount of hate I see towards cops, it intrigues me to become one. It seems like people nowadays don't respect the police as much as they used to. Which is what I want to change, I want others to see that cops are the good guys and what we do is saving your life. As I've grown up, I haven't really accomplished much. My sister had a successful journey with basketball. Where as I’ve seemed to be in the shadows, not doing much. That's why I think becoming a police officer will go towards me having an impactful…
