Hydraulic fracturing, which is more commonly known as fracking, is a process where a large volume of water mixed with other chemicals and components is injected into the ground at a high pressure. This causes cracks or fissures to form which releases the natural gases into wells that have been built for collection as (shown in figure 1).

This process is currently being debated within South Africa, where companies such as Shell and Chevron are suggesting that this process should be used to extract the natural gas that is in the Karoo (shown in figure 2) and organisations such as Treasure the Karoo are concerned about the damage that may occur to the environment by using this process. Shell plans on fracking in the area shown in yellow on figure 2. …show more content…
What impact, if any, do you think fracking would have on the environment of South Africa?
A) A positive one
B) A negative one
C) No impact
8. Do you think South Africa should begin fracking?
A) Yes
B) No
A copy of the questions I asked both Monica Schmalenberger and Niall Kramer in our interviews.
1) South Africa is looking at fracking in order to have a more environmentally friendly resource for energy. Why do you think the country wants to use fracking instead of any other resource such as nuclear power?
2) There are a lot of things that could go wrong with fracking as it has in Pennsylvania, United States. What do you think is going to be done in order to stop that from happening in the Karoo?
3) How will fracking effect South Africa economically? And will the companies keep the money made from fracking within the country or not?
4) The Karoo has a diverse ecosystem and the communities as well as the ecosystem rely on the water supply. What is going to be done to protect the water and ecosystem if fracking does occur?
5) Who is most likely going to benefit from this process?
