Fractured Femur.
Definition :
A femoral fracture is a bone fracture that involves the femur. It includes hip fractures.
Causes of fractured femur :
The femur is a tremendously strong bone,in order for a femur fracture to occur, either a large force must be applied or something is wrong with the bone. In patients with normal bone strength, the most common causes of femur fractures include:
-Car accidents
-Falls from a height
Patients may also have bone that is weakened by osteoporosis, tumor, or infection. These conditions can lead to a so-called pathologic femur fracture. One type of femoral fracture caused by weakening of the bone is seen in patients taking bisphosphonate medications for treatment of osteoporosis.
Femur fractures are generally separated into three broad categories:
•Proximal Femur Fractures- Proximal femur fractures, or hip fractures, involve the upper-most portion of the thigh bone, just adjacent to the hip joint. These fractures are further subdivided into different types of hip fractures that are discussed elsewhere.
•Femoral Shaft Fractures- A femoral shaft fracture is a severe injury that generally occurs in high-speed motor vehicle collisions and significant falls. These injuries are often one of several major injuries experienced by a patient .The treatment of a femoral shaft facture is almost always with surgery. The most common procedure is to insert a metal rod down the center of the thigh bone called an intramedullary rod. This procedure reconnects the two ends of the bone, and the rod is

Your 80 year old great aunt Evelyn was placing a canning jar on the top shelf when she stepped awkwardly off of the stool and twisted her leg at the hip. After collapsing to the floor, she found that she could no longer stand. She was taken to the emergency room where X rays revealed that the neck of her femur was fractured. A bone scan revealed reduced bone mass in the head and neck regions of the injured femur, in other long bones of the body and in the vertebrae, suggestive of osteoporosis. Surgery was required to repair the femur, and a biopsy of the bone tissue revealed that the composition of the osteoid is normal. Healing of the fracture is proceeding slowly.…

She felt a sharp pain in her hip and, after collapsing to the floor, found she could no longer stand. She was taken to the emergency room where an X ray showed that the neck of her femur was fractured. More detailed X ray images revealed reduced bone mass in the head and neck regions of the injured femur, in the ends of other long bones of the body and in the vertebrae. Choice “E” is the best answer. A spiral femoral shaft fracture in a non-ambulatory child is considered non-accidental injury (NAI), or physical abuse, until proven otherwise. The fracture occurs through a torsional force (twisting) applied to the leg. Skeletal survey is necessary to look for other (acute and old) fractures. Other fracture patterns that are often…

A fracture occurs when a bone in the body is broken. When a bone is fractured, its natural or original alignment is displaced. Therefore to repair the break, the fragmented bone must be aligned to ‘reduce’ the fracture; hence the term reduction. However, the type of fracture determines the type of reduction procedure needed. There are two forms of reduction available to patient. The two kinds of reduction are;…

The femur bone is the largest bone in the human body. Connecting the knee to the thigh, this bone plays a vital part to support walking, running, bending, climbing stairs and other every day activities. The main bone connects the kneecap or patella and the knee to the hipbone. While the knee pulls and pushes while walking, the femur bone plays a vital role in supporting it and in making movements easy and flexible. The groove of the femur bone is called femoral groove.…

Osteoporosis is a disease of bones that leads to an increased risk of fracture. Osteoporosis is a disorder in which the bones become increasingly brittle due to the loss of calcium and other mineral components. In osteoporosis, the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture deteriorates, and the amount and variety of proteins in bones are altered. Osteoporosis can cause severe back pain, hip fracture, and loss of mobility. It is very damaging to the vertebrae and can lead to needing spinal surgery. Age is an independent risk factor for the development of Osteoporosis and the prevalent rises drastically with age. (Jen Hyashi)…
