According to Professional Compounding Centers of America” (PCCA, 2012), “Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are “made from scratch” – individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.” (What is Compounding?)

Based on the information on the company’s web site, it seems like the organization keeps a decentralized structure, with a very active involvement of its owner/CEO, Paul Franck and its general manager Stephen Floyd. There are account executives, pharmacy managers, customer service supervisor, and managers for each division. The divisions are: The Human Compounding Lab, the Veterinary Compounding Lab, and the Infusion Pharmacy. In some cases the employee was alert to every detail, careful, and conscious, but the result is not good. In other cases (like in the horses case), the employee just do not pay enough attention or do not follow the right procedures to get a good result; if that happens the company should implement a zero tolerance policy for non-careful actions.
With the dye solution contamination case added to the horses incident in 2009, Franck’s Pharmacy will lose some or maybe a lot of its reputation as one of the most recognized compounding laboratories in the country and will lose the confidence the community has placed on the business and its owner Paul Franck, who for 29 years has given excellent service, hiring high trained professionals, and acquiring technologically advanced equipment.
If the pharmacy get to keep its license and can respond financially to the penalties and sanctions resulting of this mistakes, this episode should serve to its owner as an attention call to make some changes on the company structure, where the middle managers and the rest of the employees are more accountable for not careful mistakes and become more conscious about the responsibility they have toward the community they work
