Part is that I can still taste the cake” (60-64). This quote shows how Natalie Diaz isn’t exactly fond of her brother, she isn’t happy that he is alive, that she imagined having a celebration with her family about his death, when in reality he was alive. Therefore, in “The Gift of Siblings” by Frank Bruni and “No More Cake Here” by Natalie Diaz, use their own experiences with their own siblings to make a strong case for their relationships over a lifetime that they think is typical in most American families. Take a look back in your family experience with your sibling’s relationship, do you feel like Frank Bruni or Natalie Diaz.

The Canadian short stories “Brother Dear” by Bernice Friesen and “The Charmer” written by Budge Wilson focus on the struggles and common conflicts between parents and their children during adolescence. Both stories are told in the younger sister’s point of view and show how everyone matures and gains independence throughout and at the end of the story. Without family, people will have no one to guide them through childhood and assist with decisions through adulthood. The role of parents and sibling can have a huge impact on the development of a child. If one member breaks their commitment to family values, the next generation may lack the optimal environment to grow up in. The play successfully portrays how people can differentiate depending on how they are raised and by whom. Barb’s sister Janice was raised by a different family and therefore has values and beliefs than Barb even though they are sisters. Barb tells Janice, “ Back in Otter Lake, if somebody’s not home, we wait inside” (Taylor, 28). This quote shows an example of a difference in social customs between the two because of where they were raised. Although the quote doesn’t show why guidance is essential, it does show how guidance can shape whom someone is regardless of where they were born. With that in mind one can imagine what it would be like for someone without a family to provide guidance. People should stay true to their family because everybody relies on guidance from their family even when they are not blood…

This tale may seem like a common family issue, but it is only typical because we don’t recognize that comparing siblings to one another is a problem, therefore, this problem keeps repeating time and time again. This parenting technique doesn’t achieve the parent’s goal of trying to convince their kids in obtaining good qualities because a parent can’t conform a child or teen to become a specific person. Due to the fact that the parent is making the kid feel that they have less value than their siblings. This issue may seem small, but then again it is all about your perspective on the…

Significant life events can negatively impact family relationships, since the family is often strained to respond to the changes brought upon by these events. Because of her parents' divorce, the narrator is only able to see her father once per week. This limitation in face-to-face contact strains their relationship. To make things worse, when the narrator turns ten, she is introduced to her “weekend sibling”: a half sister she never knew she had. Seeing the strong bond between her half sister and her father causes the narrator to become jealous of the relationship between them. At one point, the narrator is even prompted to ask her father to stop taking her out to lunch “Once I told him not to come anymore, that I had other friends and needed more time to play with them.” (Viewpoints 12, p.39). Regardless, the narrator manages to get along fine with her sister and dad, up until she leaves home for university. As the face-to-face contact declines to visits once or twice a year, her relationship with her father worsens greatly. Obviously, maintaining communication is key to keeping a healthy relationship, especially after life events such as divorce, and family members moving away from home.…

“I am an only child, I only have one sister” (Woody Allen). This statement is characteristic of the complex relationship between siblings. Dunn & Kendrick (1982) referred to emotions amongst siblings being both of love and hate (cited in Smith, Cowie & Blades, 2011). It is commonly believed that the existence of sibling interactions creates a beneficial environment for a child’s emotional and mental early development. Are the only children at a disadvantage then? This question seems to be particularly important; especially the last few years where evidence shows that due to socioeconomic reasons, one-child families tend to increase (Chen & Liu, 2014).…
