An anti-hero can be so indecisive to the point that it becomes crippling to the clarity of the narrative. Sometimes this issue can make the narrative difficult to comprehend and understand the actions depicted in the narrative. An anti-hero is typically a character that is awkward, spontaneous, has few or no abilities or skills but can have both good and bad assets. One example of an anti-hero can be found in the narrator of the short novel Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The narrator in this novel describes himself as “I am a sick man….I am a spiteful man” (Dostoyevsky) in the very first sentence which gives the reader an immediate sense that this person is evil and out to do horrible or harmful things to others. By describing oneself in this manner gives the reader an immediate since that this person doesn’t exhibit any traits of a hero but it does draw the reader in and produces a sense of wanting to indulge into the story to see exactly why the person would describe themselves this particular way.
