My eyes snap open and the image of a room slowly focuses into my vision. I look around wondering where I am and become aware of a loud shrill noise. Then I remember, this is my place now, this is where I live and that clock needs to stop beeping. Slowly I get out of bed and look into the mirror asking myself the same question as I always do, "Why am I getting up, its not like there is anything for me to do." My room is nothing like I remember it from last night. Last night I had strewn the clothes I was wearing all about the room and sequentially thrashed it by everywhere looking form my pajamas that I somehow never seem to find. Now, my room is all clean. A few classic books come to mind that I read earlier in my college career that offer some insight as to how this situation came into fruition. The characters from these books found themselves in the pursuit of a new more advanced future yet the characters only found themselves deposed or dead prematurely due to this constant seek for better and grander. First I think of Frankenstein’s monster, from Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. The Monster was Victor’s hope and passion for he was trying to breathe life into and new race. Nearly immediately after this significant feat and advancement in science he is disappointed. Upon the climax of his work he sees the grotesque culmination of his work and that scientific marvel unravels his life soon after. For another example, consider Beatrice from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Rappaccini’s Daughter. Dr. Rappaccini had spent his life creating and improving poisons to the apex of his daughter, Beatrice, who became the embodiment of poison. She could be the next step of evolution for the human race, instead she just wants to be normal and live out her life with anther. She then dies leaving both her future and Dr. Rappaccini’s dashed away. In these cases the fruition of a new technological achievement assures an untimely demise and while on the outside it is an advancement, it is also at a cost for
