Shelly was born on August 30, 1797 in London, England. Shelly was an English novelist and storywriter, best known for her novel Frankenstein. “A competition between Percy, Lord Byron, Shelly, and John Polidori was created to see who could write the best horror story. Shelly dreamed about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he made(). Inspiring Shelly to start writing Frankenstein, she was eighteen. The first printing of Frankenstein was released when she was twenty, in 1818(Shelly 2013)”.
The first printing was published anonymously in London 1818. Shelly was part of the late English Renaissance and early Victorian age. She was one of the few women writers of the time. There were some concerns about the topic of the book. “Shelly’s name appeared on the second edition published in France 1823. The third edition was published in 1831. Shelly was required to edit the book because of the serious themes, and moral issues. Shelly was not trying to create a supernatural story, she simply wrote the book for entertainment (Shelly)”. However, the time period was more conservative and the topic was not considered appropriate. The last published version of Frankenstein from 1831 is the version still read today.
Shelly created the character of Victor because she lost so many loved ones in her past. One of the many family members that died in Shelly’s life was her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft passed away right after giving birth to Shelly. Sadly, Shelly never knew her mother. Years after her mother’s death, Shelly’s father William Godwin married Mary Jane Clarimont. Shelly started an affair with Percy Bysshe Shelly. Shelly and Percy got married after Percy first wife Harriet committed suicide. Shelly lost two of her children before giving birth to her only surviving child, Percy Florence Shelley. In 1822, Shelly’s husband drowned when his boat sank during a storm.
Death is the main theme of the story. The main characters are Dr. Victor Frankenstein and the monster. Victor spends months creating the monster from old dead body parts. He uses arms, legs, and a head, sews them together and creates a whole new person that he brings to life. Victor finally brings his monster to life, and it horrifies him.
The monster murdered Victor’s younger brother, Victor’s brother’s nanny was hanged and Victor’s death at the end of the story. The monster threated Victor and his wife to murder them on their weeding day. This shares to Shelly’s experiences with death in her life. Death made her who she was and created a dream about creating life. However, the monster is selfish and mean, instead of being a normal caring person that victor wanted.
The monster caused many more problems for Victor and the town because the monster murdered Victor’s younger brother. When the Victor’s family found out they blamed the nanny. She was sensed to death for the murder and she was hanged. Shelly’s message from these events is that the monster caused death. Victor regrets making the monster. The monster asked Victor to create a female companion for him. Victor refuses to make a mate because he was scared of his first creation. The monster threatened Victors saying, he was going to kill him and his wife on their wedding day. He starts to create the mate but then he changes his mind because he knows it’s a bad idea. Victor chases the monster on a dogsled because he wants to kill the monster. He doesn’t kill the monster, and Victor gets sick and dies. In the end, we learn Victor’s actions were dreadful because it led him to death. The monster was upset after the death of Victor because he is a father to him. The monster felt upset and guilty because he thinks the death of Victor was his fault. The monster commits suicide and this refers Shelly’s life when her step-mom comets suicide. Shelly’s moral of the story was to save people’s lives. The Character Victor brings people back from the dead and that relates to Shelly because after her losing all her loved ones She would want to bring them back to life. Creating a new life with old dead body parts is wrong.
