for his lack involvement it’s easy to see why so many Americans were immediately drawn to Roosevelt who said he would take control, who said he had plans that would fix everything. Roosevelt himself says, “There are many ways in which it can be helped, but it can never be helped merely by talking about it. We must act and act quickly.” showing the American people that he is a man of action, a man that can help them drag themselves up out of the depression they had fallen in.
Roosevelt’s Inaugural Address also gave American citizens the reassuring, frank, and at some points bleak words that they needed to hear. American citizens of the time wanted confirmation that they would get help, and they needed their situation to be empathized with. Roosevelt gave all these things in his Inaugural Address and more. For instance he shows his understanding of the people’s troubles when he says, “A host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence, and an equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.” He also gave them reassurance that he and the Government would be there to help them recover when he said, “Our greatest primary task is to put people to work. This is no unsolvable problem if we face it wisely and courageously. It can be accomplished in part by direct recruiting by the Government itself, treating the task as we would treat the emergency of a war.” At some points such as when he says, “I am prepared under my constitutional duty to recommend the measures that a stricken Nation in the midst of a stricken world may require,” he both show how he empathizes with the people’s situation and reassures them that something will be done to help them.
