Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his pregnant wife were on their way to have Ferdinand recite a speech and meet with the mayor of Sarajevo. He was there on behalf of Austria-Hungary as he wanted Bosnia to follow Austria-Hungary.
The Blackhand had executed a poor attempt to kill him during Ferdinand’s trip to see the mayor. The Blackhand had positioned multiple assailants along the archduke’s route. One assassin had thrown a grenade without knowing it had a 10 second delay so evidently the grenade bounced off the back of the archduke’s vehicle. The assassin then drank his vial of cyanide, but it only made him vomit as the poison was extremely old and bitter. The assailant then proceeded to drown himself in a four inch canal. He, in turn, was then caught and taken in for questioning.
The Archduke went to see the mayor after the incident. There he found out that four poor souls were injured by the grenade and taken to the hospital. The Archduke, hoping to give the injured the support they needed, set out toward the hospital with his pregnant wife.

sandwich shop. Gavrilo Princip, the leader of the group of assassins that were in Bosnia to kill the archduke, had just finished eating a sandwich and was exiting the shop when he noticed the archduke’s car drive up in front of him. Gavrilo Princip didn’t hesitate and shot two bullets from his gun, one hitting Ferdinand’s wife in the stomach killing her and her baby and the other bullet going straight through the archduke’s neck. The Archduke of Austria-Hungary was dead.
“I can’t believe what happened, it was so sudden, so quick.
All I remember was the young fellow with the gun came into my store and ordered a chicken sandwich, paid, ate, and then left without saying another word. Next thing I know, I heard gunshots from outside my shop and I turned to investigate. I then saw the boy with a gun pointed at the archduke and his wife. Both were dead.” Ahmed Buric, the sandwich shop owner proved that Gavrilo had murdered the archduke and his family. Gavrilo killed the archduke, but why would he do such a thing? Did he have a vendetta against the archduke? Or was he just a paid
mercenary?
“We trained for hours on end just to kill that wretched archduke. We practiced grenade throwing, marksmanship, along with taking a vial of cyanide with us as to leave no witnesses. We failed at the Town Square but I killed the archduke and fulfilled my mission.” Gavrilo Princip testified. Apparently this whole incident was planned from the very beginning. Gavrilo killed the archduke in cold blood, however it raises the question of how a few amateur assassins could obtain the weapons and poison all on their own.
Future investigation revealed a telegram that connected the Blackhand with the Siberian government. Siberia apparently wanted Bosnia to join them and not Austria-Hungary. Maybe this is why they made the Blackhand and sent them to Bosnia to kill the Archduke. The Archduke was there in order to try and get the Bosnia to join the Austro-Hungarian Empire willingly. No matter the case, Austria-Hungary blames Siberia for the death of their archduke which no doubt means that a war is upon us.
