Freak The Mighty: Character Analysis

Ponyboy, the main character of The Outsiders, and Max the main character in Freak the Mighty share many similarities. For example, Pony’s parents died in a car crash and now he lives with his brothers. Likewise Max lives with his grandparents, because his mom is dead and his father is in jail. In addition both Pony and Max face the loss of close friends. Ponyboy’s friend Johnny died from injuries sustained in a fire, while Max’s friend Freak dies from his heart becoming too big for his chest. Finally Ponyboy and Max shutdown emotionally and grow depressed from their friend’s deaths. After Johnny dies Ponyboy becomes confused and absent minded, and starts failing his classes. When Freak dies Max stays in the down under for a couple of months.
