Chapter 1: What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common?
This chapter’s main idea is that the study of economics is the study of incentives. We find a differentiation between economic incentives, social incentives and moral incentives. Though I found it hard to understand how this was explained by economic models/theories. However, the statistics shown in the book prove the accuracy of the theory. A very interesting fact is that reading stories for the kids has no positive impact on them while having a huge library at home does have a positive impact – sounds contradictory and odd but again we need to look on the underlying influences. Here once again we link with the previous knowledge in chapter 3: conventional wisdom is sometimes wrong, as it is the common parenting practices. Though I remain skeptical on this topic, since there are several factors that haven’t been considered, which also have influence on the children, for example, heredity.
