In the book My Bondage and My Freedom, Frederick Douglass writes about his experience as a slave and the struggles throughout his slavery period. In his book, he argues very boldly that slavery was an institution that was very cruel which “victimized” everyone in the society. I agree with Frederick Douglass’s claim that slavery is an institution that victimizes everyone because of how everyone believed that there was not a problem in treating one race ruthlessly. Slave holders beating the blacks carelessly, restrictions from him seeing his mother, and no affection towards the need of rest from the slaves. Growing up as a slave he witnessed and encountered plenty of merciless punishments. Frederick Douglass was a man who started from the bottom as a captive slave to make it free as a liberal man.
Secondly, Frederick Douglass argues that in these plantations, the slaves are being held against their will and are stripped of humanity in these economic times. In this period slaves were taken captive from Africa to border slave ships where they were transported. “Slaves-holders would still gain profit even though the majority of these slaves died from the diseases on the ship” (Pettengill, 7-16-13). This also shows victimization of the slaves and slave-holders because the majority of Africans couldn’t defend themselves through the harboring and the slave holders just wanted to make money. The slaves were beaten wickedly and would always try to escape. Slave owners were likewise victimized because they believed that any slave who tries to reach freedom should be punished. Due to the wealth of the slave holders, they often bought slaves to make production faster. The majority of the poor non-slave holding whites would be tools of these slave-holders and also servants.
