Free College for All
Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to go to college for free? President Obama is proposing a plan for two free years of community college for anyone and everyone. This plan quite possibly could pave the way for a more fruitful and educated future in America for many reasons. Not everyone agrees with this idea, but hopefully Congress does. Once determined how this project will be funded, Americans should be excited to have such a program in action. It will affect more than just people’s education levels.
"Community college should be free for those willing to work for it because, in America, a quality education should not be a privilege that is reserved for a few," said President Obama in a speech he gave at a state community college according to Florida times union (2015). Other countries like in Europe and Germany already offer free college, yet we are the land of the free and deprive the citizens of an education because of their financial situations. We offer grants that take so much paperwork effort and stress that some, especially the less educated, have a hard time completing. We offer student loans that have so much interest that it leaves the student in debt for years to come. Why we haven't taken a lesson from the results in the other countries that do offer free college before now is baffling.
"It's not just for kids," Obama said. "We also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages, better benefits." According to www.forum.nationstates.net (2015) if all states participate in this plan nine million students could save $3,800 a year on tuition. Of course, those not willing to put in the work will not be able to qualify for it. The student will be expected to maintain a decent grade point average which to me is an excellent criteria. This program seems like it will benefit the

The community-college tuition initiative by President Obama is a subject to unusual superlatives as it seeks to universalize two years of college. The plan integrates policies that attempt to narrow educational disparities that are characteristics of growing socioeconomic inequality in the United States. In this sense, the purported Obama tuition plan sought to facilitate an increase in the attendance of college students, therefore ensuring higher graduation rates with less debt compared to the current curriculum. The ideal, rendered most Republicans allergic to the ideology as it carried a 10-year price tag of $60 billion that included state and federal components (Alexander). However, the plan is already a subject to criticism due to its failure to account for the fact that few students under the current college…

Throughout my education journey there’s been one phrase that’s stuck with me, ”knowledge is key”, and one way to accomplish knowledge is by getting an education. The dilemma is that many don’t have access to achieve this due to financial needs but soon that may change. On January 08, 2016 President Obama presented a proposal that may eventually help many Americans reach their educational goals without all the debt that comes with it.This proposal is called the “America’s College Promise”, which allows two years of community college to be free for those students who are willing to put in the work. This promise will allow students to earn their first half of a bachelor's degree, which will also allow them to earn the skills needed in the workforce. According to Obama,” this plan is a chance to graduate ready for the new economy, without a load of debt”, and I agree. I believe that having the chance to go to a community college without having to pay for tuition for two years is a great idea, especially for those willing to put work for it and prove that this opportunity will not be in vain.. This is a chance for people who once would've never had a chance to achieve their “key” our economy will benefit greatly.…

With President Obama getting ready to leave office and the 2016 presidential campaign that's been going on we have more than often heard the question Should community college be free? President Obama came fourth with the idea of making community college free and as we have seen some people including presidential candidates like Bernie Sander support this, however not everyone agrees that this is a good idea. The hope that President Obama has with making community college free is that more people will be encouraged to go out and get their degree. As we often see more students who have graduated high school tend to go to work rather than continuing going to school and part of the reason for this is that these kids don't want to be in debt. Making…

Paying for community college can be a handful for some. While many can pay for college with financial aid, however a many students argue that they can’t afford to pay off tuition or the cost of books and material because it’s too expensive and they don’t attend community college. This is a serious issue for many people that want to earn a degree in a particular majors. Obama promotes the idea that community college should be free to attend and take class without the burden of paying for tuition or the overwhelming cost that students fear. With that statement gain more of an outcry of students agreeing on the idea and many others opposing of it. In the article by Joanne Jacobs, “As He Promotes It, Some Question Obama’s Free Community College Idea,” she discusses that there are pros and cons to both arguments.…

If one looks at the data, the bigger problem is that many students don’t finish college. “Only about 55 percent of students graduate six years after starting,” Bob Luebke (a writer for the Civitas Institute.) The problem is not access but completion. So why do people drop out of college? For the most part, money is not the biggest problem; it’s usually factors like family issues, or transportation. Providing free tuition to institutions that graduate only a small amount over 50 percent of their students does not make economic sense. Also, if college tuition does become free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and will most likely drop out as well as more students that will major in fields with little or no market…

Obama has proposed the idea of having community college be free in order to increase the number of people to own a degree. Joanne Jacobs writes in her article about free community college that “The White House estimates that this would cost $60 billion for over 10 years” to execute. With our economy in shambles at the moment, this can worsen the economic status of the country, adding to the drastic debt that continuously rises on a daily basis. If Obama creates some sort of promise about tuition being free, then another issue could arise, which is having schools become more crowded than what they already are. States need to spend more money in order to increase the…

Imagine living in a household where getting a higher education wasn’t an option, this is the case for hundreds of people in the United states every year. Over the course of years, thousands of people go to college straight after high school with the privilege of being able to afford it, while others who aren’t economically stable can’t. Lowering the cost of college will increase the number of students who enroll annually because it will open more opportunities to those who are less fortunate than…

Two years of FREE community college! In theory, this sounds like a really good idea, and would give numerous people, who would otherwise not have the option to continue his education, the opportunity to get a good start on his college degree. President Obama has proposed a two year, free community college plan. in his speech given at Pellissippi State College in Knoxville, Tennessee, President Obama stated, a college education should be “as free and universal as high school is today” (Korte). High school is not free. Tax paying citizens pay for children to get a high school education. College should be more affordable for those who wish to pursue a higher education, but the President’s plan will not work; there are too many expenses that would not allow the nation to support every college student who attends a two year college. There are too many questions and concerns about offering two years of free higher education to everyone. College is not for everyone, and certainly will…

Recently, it was announced that the President is trying to make community college free for all. Most of my friends will be going to community college next year. Some are going there because it was the only option for them to further their education, others because they did not have enough financial help to go to a four-year college. So wouldn’t a free community college have a good impact on them? Supporters of this idea say that it can persuade more people to go to college and get more financial diversity into the community colleges. What they don’t see is the horrible repercussions that those effects will have in the education system that can easily deter people from getting a good education and will instead have hopeful low-income students get a mediocre education.…

During the 2016 presidential election, the debate of whether or not college tuition should be free was a popular one. Although none of the candidates who used it as part of their platform were elected, it remains a popular topic of discussion, especially resonating with college-aged students and those who are still recovering from college debt. Additionally, the socio-economic divide is at an all-time high, and much of it is due to college not being accessible to lower-class individuals. In order to lessen the growing socio-economic divide, college tuition should be free.…
