For eight single professional women gathered in Dallas, it is holy Wednesday — the night each week that they gather in one of their homes for the Traveling Bachelorette Party. Munching snacks and passing a bottle of wine, they cheer, cry and cackle as their spiritual leader, Trista Rehn, braves heartache, indecision and the occasional recitation of bad poetry to choose from among her 25 swains. Yet something is unsettling Leah Hudson's stomach, and it's not just the wine. "I hate that we've been sucked into the Hoover vac of reality TV," says Hudson, 30. "Do we not have anything better to do than to live vicariously through a bunch of 15-minute-fame…

The debate about beauty pageants is as varied as the kind of beauty pageants which are in existence today. Pageants go anywhere from the traditional late teens, early twenties, type pageant; to children’s pageants; to pageants for the disabled; and pageants for everything in between. No matter what kind of pageant it is, beauty is always a factor in determining the pageant’s outcome. That does not necessarily mean exterior beauty though; some pageants focus on inner beauty and strength.…

“The Lady with the Dog,” is a story about Dmitri and Anna both of whom are married to another person, they meet while on vacation in Yalta. Anton Chekhov is a realist writer and through this work tries to disprove a romance by using Dmitri and Anna as an example. Yalta wouldn’t be the one and only place that they meet due to an “intolerable bondage.” “The Lady with the Dog” disproves the idea of a romance and shows that love can become a problem.…

The most obvious thing was the smiling. In Ukraine it is taught, it is a part of its culture, to interpret smiling as a sign of foolishness. It is how fools are conveyed in art, books and films. People of intellect do not smile without a reason; if you are amused and it isn’t because you read or was told something funny then you must be ‘empty-headed’. People who are learned are weighed by serious thought and therefore do not smile. People who are working class, and are upstanding members of society in order to be perceived as such do not smile, and especially do not smile at strangers. In the United States you are taught to smile when making new friends, greeting a potential employer, or just saying hello to a friend.…

Child beauty pageants date all the way back to the 1920s. However, the first beauty pageant in the United States took place in the 1960s (Child Beauty Pageants – Pros and Cons 1). Pageants were a gateway for tourism to flourish. To this day, young girls all over America compete in pageants year round. These competitions have progressed tremendously over the decades. For many years, child beauty pageants were considered to be “fairly benign” (When Beauty Becomes A Beast 1). They have transformed from “frilly party dresses and satin ribbons” to “conveniently seduc[ing] the very essence of beauty, confidence and poise to gain its position in the world of…

She takes a neutral opinion about beauty pageants and sheds light on some positive effects surrounding beauty pageants as well as the negative on young girls. In the article, she writes about the different types of pageants. The first pageant discussed is one that involves contestants performing a talent and participating in an interview in order to win a prize aimed toward their education, such as a scholarship for college. The second type of pageant talked about is the pageant based only on the physical appearance of the contestant. These types of pageants often do not contain an education prize to the winner. She argues that the second type of pageant objectify young girls and make them believe that only outward beauty is important. She then opposes her statement by saying there is no reason that young girls should be ashamed of flaunting their physically beauty. I think this article has potential to be useful in my paper. It gives both a positive and negative view of beauty…
