becomes dangerous. In my eyes freedom of speech is important to a college campus.
College is a time were students should be learning more about the world as a whole and an important part of that is hearing ideas or beliefs that are not in line with their own. The spread of beliefs that don’t line up with the student bodies is a good life lesson for the students as they gain a larger perspective on the country as they might have never meet or seen people that had a different belief system that they had. Being introduced to people that don’t agree with you on different issues is important because it will allow students to work on respectively talking to people that are vastly different than them. This is important part of going to college as in the workforce you will be expected to do work with a many different types of people. The exposer to new ideas will lead to more in depth important discussions to happen on your campus making your campus an open safe place for ideas. This creates and environment where people freely share ideas making them more likely to think outside of the box. This is what college should be a place to learn about your chosen field of study but to also learn about people and learn how to expand your mind with
diversity.
Colleges have been seen as Eco chambers of ideas and that’s not the view colleges should be going for as they want to be a place of diversity and they can do this by scheduling speakers that have different views that the majority of the student body. The risk that schools run with scheduling very opiated speakers is if the student body handles it the wrong way such as the what happened at the University of California, Berkley. Students didn’t agree that the college was bringing in speakers that politicly stand far right like Ann Coulter and Milo Yiannopoulos so they protested. They counter protests where the right way to handle the situation but then they became more violent and essentially turned into riots where the school had to stop the engagements because of safety percussions. The school did the correct thing in stopping the speaking engagements because they don’t want anybody getting hurt but it sends the wrong message to the students that violent protests work, but also the wrong message to the media that college students are closeminded. Colleges don’t have to scheduling these types of speakers but in my opinion, they should as it will help expose your students to new things. People may not always agree with how people use the freedom of speech but that’s what makes it important to have this freedom on college campuses.
