In 1871 the National Rifle Association was established to protect the gun rights of American citizens as well as make sure the country was prepared for war. In the 1930s criminals such as Al Capone, John Dillinger, and Bonnie and Clyde made headlines because of their infamously violent crimes. These crimes led to The National Firearms Act of 1934, which regulated fully automatic firearms by implementing a tax on them hoping that it would decrease the circulation of these weapons. The Federal Firearms Act of 1938 imposed actions that regulated firearms and made it essential that a record be kept of firearms. Gun control controversy began arising after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. This event shook Americans and brought attention to the lack of control over the sale and possession of firearms.
