I am writing this letter on behalf of Thomas Woodrow Wilson, a young man I had the privilege of teaching for four years as an undergraduate. As a teacher of Advanced Placement United States History at Princeton University (formally known as the College of New Jersey) for the past few decades, many gifted students have entered my classroom, but Woodrow’s potential really stood out to me. I base this not solely on his scholarly accomplishments, as Woodrow was not always a stellar student, but rather on his leadership abilities, self-sufficiency and determination to reform the institutions around him. Even as an undergraduate, Woodrow organized a student club to discuss public affairs. He also joined the American Whig Society on campus, actively leading debates on points of government and how they could be improved.…

What exactly is freedom? Is it the ability to think for yourself, to speak without the fear of consequences, to be able to vote in federal elections or is it something much more? Ambrose Flask attempts to unravel the true meaning of freedom in his short story “The Strangers That Came to Town.” This story outlines the journey of the Duvitch family as they rise from the depths of oppression to obtain a sense of equality and acceptance from their society. In his short story, “The Strangers that Came to Town”, Ambrose Flack is showing that true freedom is about being accepted. First of all, the Duvitches’ dark, mysterious past helps bring a deeper meaning to their tale and highlights their longtime struggle for freedom. Additionally, their treatment from the townspeople truly exemplifies the meaning and Euphoria granted by freedom. Finally, the character development of other characters in the story shows that freedom is received when it is given. In “The Strangers That Came to Town,” it is proven that the true meaning of freedom is being accepted through the Duvitches’ dark past, the Duvitches’ treatment from the townspeople, and the character development shown from characters in the story.…

Theodore Roosevelt had many philosophies for handling major events and foreign policies like building strategic structures like the Panama Canal and by making peace in other countries that were at war or were at a disagreement. He went to “less civilized” countries in an attempt to make peace and protect the world. What Roosevelt meant by less civilized was non-white, Latin, or Slavic countries. “He believed that a civilized nation had the right and duty to intervene in the affairs of uncivilized nation to preserve order and stability.” (Brinkley, 603) Not only was this policy about racism but also about the economic development. Going overseas meant that the president could act freely and openly with less regard to Congress or the courts. Roosevelt could act without public opinion and could exercise power alone. Before anyone thought about getting involved in foreign affairs or had any interest, Roosevelt believed that involvement would help in development of American sea power.…

Freedom Writers shows that culture acts as a barrier for acceptance. In this film, the school is spilt by race and clearly shows the influence of culture on a person’s sense of belonging. This can be seen through the quote, “in this school, everyone is spilt by race, little Cambodia, Little Africa, white and Latino.” This quote shows that culture categories people and affects their sense of belonging. It also shows, despite living in the same place, they still separate themselves by their background, their heritage and colour. This can clearly be seen in the classroom, whereby the room is divided into four sections, according to ‘gang’ affiliations. Each ‘gang’ refuses to associate with each other, resulting in a sense of displacement among students in the…
