Specific French immigration waves contributed different labor practices to American society. For example, the Huguenots introduced a number of skilled crafts to the United States, including sophisticated techniques of weaving, leather dressing, lace making, and felt manufacture. Some historians claim that the Huguenots' stylish ways helped transform crude frontier settlements into civilized cities and towns. Refugees from the French Revolution and the fall of Napoleon who came to the United States tended to be former army officers or aristocrats. These educated individuals often taught the French language or such elite activities as fencing and dancing. A number of French chefs, hairdressers, dress designers, and perfumers accompanied the wave…
Revolution. This was due to the fact that Britain acquired massive debts from the war and needed to pay them off. They decided the best way to get the money back would be to tax the colonies. The Stamp Act for instance, taxed printed goods such as papers, stamps and newspapers. The Sugar Act was also directly imposed on the colonies in 1764 and taxed such items as molasses, which was used to make alcohol at that time. These taxes were directed by the British government to help pay for expenses acquired during the war. These new, arbitrary taxes severely angered the colonist. The British were determined to collect these new taxes. It was…
It is incredibly difficult to select only one of Saint Patrick’s practices in reaching the Celts because they are all so beautiful and effective. However, the way in which Patrick and his people set up Monastic communities and invited people to observe and participate in a new way of living—the kingdom of God way—is perhaps the most applicable for today. To this point, Hunter states, “The monastic communities invited seekers, refugees, and others, individuals and even families, to be their guests” (Hunter 41). This is a beautiful picture of the church (the people of God) opening up their lives so that others can observe kingdom living in their lives and homes. Conversely, some might assume that an hour on Sunday is enough observation for one…

American music was heavily influenced by the European culture. When the English migrated to America, they brought with them their musical traits. This is commonly referred to as the European American Stream. There are a few common musical traits that the Europeans brought to America: ballads, call-and-response, and cantillation. Ballads are a type of song that tells a story centered around a historical event or a tragedy. The unique trait or characteristic of a ballad is its repeating melodies. These repeating melodies are known as strophic, or verse repeating. “One of the most widely performed songs in this centuries-old tradition is Barbara Allen” (Starr and Waterman, 21). A second trait of the European American stream is the call-and-response.…

The American and French Revolutions were both fundamentally based on the Enlightenment ideas. The main ideas that they followed were by John Locke. His ideas inspired the Americans and the French to have a revolution. In these revolutions, the Americans had success and the French failed. The success that the Americans experienced wad due to the protection of rights they had. These rights are "Life, Liberty and Property." In America a constitution was put together that provided for a stable government and also a representative government. In France failure was caused by chaos, terror, fear and war. The French were unsuccessful because they failed to create a democratic government. In the end they were left with a dictator.…

The effects of the French Revolution were vast and far reaching. The overthrowing of the monarchy quickly dealt a near fatal blow to the old feudal and monarchic system that had controlled Europe for centuries (Jörgensen, C). The Revolution got rid of serfdom and federal dues peasants previously had to pay to kings (Jörgensen, C). Outside of Europe, in South America, the spanish colonies saw a weakened Spain and the slave revolt in Haiti and began to free themselves of colonial rule. This overthrowing of large absolute governments was perhaps there greatest effect of the French Revolution (Jörgensen, C). As well there were cultural effects of the…
