problems. Friar Lawrence’s role in Romeo and Juliet foreshadows controversy with Romeo as well as
Juliet.
As the play continues we quickly learn that Friar Lawrence tends to be the voice of reason and

Friar Lawrence has an interest in Romeo and who he was with. Many times in the play not only Romeo
but Juliet comes to get advice from the Friar. ¨Ah, Juliet, I already know thy grief; It strains me past the
compass of my wits.¨ In this quote it shows how Friar Lawrence has compassion for Juliet. Throughout
the play he hides the fact that Romeo and Juliet are married from various people. All these attributes
make him a loyal friend to some and a confidant to others.
With Friar Lawrence being a true friend to help anyone in need, having a knowledge of herbs
plays a crucial role in the play. We first learn of his understanding in the beginning of scene three when it
says ¨O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities; For
naught so vile that on the earth doth live But to the earth some special good doth give; Nor aught so
good but, strained from that fair use, Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse.¨ ( Shakespeare
