At an early age, Frida had many rough patches in her life. From the time Frida was born until she was six, her life was the easiest it could be at that age. She grew up in “La Casa Azul” or “The Blue House.” At age six, Frida contracted polio which left her right leg thinner and more fragile than the left leg. It was discovered later in her life that Frida had been born with spina bifida; it had not come up until she was six. In 1929, Kahlo and Diego Rivera married. Diego was 42 years old, 6’1”, and 300 pounds. Frida was 22, 5’3”, and only 98 pounds. Frida’s mother despised Diego because he was “too old and fat,” and even worse, “a communist and an atheist.” The two were still married, and Frida painted “Frida and Diego Rivera” to commemorate their marriage. Frida tried multiple times to have children, but due to her multiple injuries, she had only miscarriages. Frida painted “Henry Ford Hospital” to show all the pain she suffered throughout her multiple miscarriages.
