Fried Green Tomatoes
Fried Green Tomatoes is a classic film for me. It tells an incredible story about friendship and courage as well as showing the strength of women overall. I have chosen to analyze this movie in depth for this film critique. This film tells the story about two different friendships between four women and how their friendship helped them become better women within themselves. This filmed was released in theaters back in 1991, which was the year I was born. However, when I watched this film back in like 2008 for the first time, I immediately fell in love. The main theme in this movie is friendship; therefore it brings out a range of emotions as if it were taking place in real life. The film takes place in a fictional town called Whistle Stop and also in Valdosta, Georgia. The characters’ dialogues contain a southern accent which helps us to understand that both story lines take place somewhere in the south. The musical score also adds to the southern feel of the movie. The score contains southern gospel songs, blues, as well as some slow ballads to add to the tone of the movie. The film also adds the sound of the whistle train all throughout the movie. Whenever you heard the train whistle, that meant that something dramatic or significant was about to take place. For example, the noise of the train is present when Idgie and Ruth went on their first adventure stowing away on a train. Other moments when the train noise was present were Evelyn is first seen in the movie, when Buddy dies, the birth on Ruth’s son, when Frank Bennett is murdered, and lastly when it is told that Ruth has cancer. Some other sounds used in the movie to enhance certain scenes such as the buzzing of the bees when Idgie went to get honey or the sizzling and cooking sounds from the café to give the audience and idea of what was taking place. The film uses voiceovers in order to transition from the past scenes to the present scene. You will notice that Ninny’s voice will start to fade out as the scene starts to transition to the
