Learning foreign languages

What are the benefits of learning a second language?
Learning a language other than your mother tongue can take many months of commitment, though the risk will more than likely open the door to several opportunities. Learning a foreign language is an investment for the future that can benefit ones career, travel adventures or personal growth. Learning a second language takes time, patience and often money. However, French, Arabic and Mandarin Chinese, among many others, are all languages that can provide great improvement to career, travel and intelligence to the person learning the language.

I am actually proud to say that I speak three languages: English, Arabic and French. Arabic and French are considered to be one of the most difficult languages to learn in the world. The University of Haifa team says that people tend to use both sides of their brain when they start reading any language. However, when learning Arabic, it may be a “wasting effort”. The detail of Arabic characters means students must only use the left side of their brain because that side is better at distinguishing detail. This is why non-Arabic speaking students may find this task to be toilsome at the beginning of the learning process.

Speaking a foreign language can help keep your extend family intact while also expanding your network of contacts. For instance, if your family came to the United States during World War II from Germany, you may also have family members who remained in Germany and others who migrated to places like Argentina and Chile; therefore knowing Spanish and German will help you to communicate with those family members and will also be helpful in conducting any genealogical research about your ancestry. On social networking sites, members speak multiple languages and live all over the world; knowing another language allows you to communicate with people who do not necessarily be in your network due to the difference in language. This expands the geographical scope of your relationships and enables you to expand your personal contacts.

Some employers are willing to offer additional rewards to employees who have the ability to speak at least two foreign languages, particularly if such languages are in high demand like Arabic, Urdu or Farsi. In addition to that, I , myself get to be open minded and a communicator because I get to express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in variety modes of communication. It also makes me work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others that do not speak my language.
Overall, learning foreign languages can benefit people in several ways and some of which I just mentioned. I believe that it is very important for a person to speak at least two foreign languages Even though it takes lots commitment and dedication, it is all worth it in the end because you are only benefitting yourself.
The study of language begins properly with a study of what language is about.
The crucial point to be considered in a study of language behaviour is the relationship between language and reality, between words and not-words.
Except as we understand this relationship, we run the grave risk of straining the delicate connection between words and facts, of permitting our words to go wild, and so of creating for ourselves fabrications of fantasy and delusion. -Malinowski
