Fritzl: The Murder Of Maria Neubauer
On October 6 in 1967, he followed a young mother home. After she’d fallen asleep, he broke into her home. At knife point, he raped her. Her child was asleep next to them in a cot whilst the attack took place. He was arrested and convicted of rape, and served 12-month out of an 18-month prison sentence. And even worse, under Austrian law, unless a crime carries a life sentence, the conviction doesn’t stay on the person’s record. The FBI states that “54.3 percent of murder victims were killed by someone they knew (acquaintance, neighbor, friend, boyfriend, etc.), and 24.8 percent were killed by a family member.” The evidence shows that this is logically the case in the Verbermockle murder mystery. After allegedly finding Mrs. Verbermockle’s husband unconscious on the bathroom floor, Mrs. Verbermockle calls her family doctor. Mrs. Verbermockle claimed that he must have slipped on a bar of soap, and she did not touch him. When the doctor arrived, he announced Mr. Verbermockle dead from a fracture to the rear of the skull caused from blunt force. However, if the FBI statistics are correct, then it is likely that Mrs. Verbermockle is the killer. Although…

In order to ensure a conviction against Bernardo, the prosecution arranged a plea bargain whereby Homolka would testify against her husband, in return for a lesser sentence (12 years) for her. If the prosecution had been in possession of the tapes, they would not have needed Homolka’s testimony, and she would have received a much longer prison sentence. Because the prosecution was not in possession of the tapes, the justice received by the families of the victims of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka was greatly diminished. Homolka, a murderer, received a lesser punishment in contrast to her husband, Paul Bernardo, simply due to her deal. Homolka drugged and killed her own sister, and actively participated in the sexual assaults and murders of other young women. By Homolka accepting a plea bargain, neither her own family nor the families of her victims received the justice they deserved and…

The Book Stasiland uses the interviews with victims and perpetrators to inform the reader on life in East Germany. To some extent, Anna Funder does paint a black a white picture of her views, separating the victims from the perpetrators. As she despises the GDR/Stasi, Funder still acknowledges that many of the officials were just doing what was told and were reluctant to react, in fear of falling under the stasis harsh rules. Despite this, many of the officials were strong believers in the system, and do not regret life damaged due to their job. The Stories of Miriam, Julia and Frau Paul do highlight how the Stasi’s tough rules, may devastate ones life and Funder recognizes this by sympathizing for the victims. By seeing the effect the Stasi had not only to the civilians yet country itself, Funder is able to see the mark the Stasi left on its country.…
