Contrary to their name, sowbugs (Porcellio laevis) are tiny crustaceans that live in moist environments around the world. These creatures, about 12.5 mm in length, are extremely unique in their physiology, habitat, diet, and behavior. Sowbugs are harmless to humans, but incredibly important to ecosystems. They are found easily in nature, and are quite hardy (Franklin, Julie A.) Though they use gill-like structures, called pseudo tracheae, to breathe, sowbugs cannot breathe underwater but are highly dependent on moisture for survival. Sowbugs can only live in habitats with high humidity and low exposure to light (Buddies, Science). Sowbugs prefer sheltered, humid areas as the sun’s bright light dries them out (Potter, Michael F).…

    1. Slave ownership gradually became more concentrated as the price of slaves increased. After the 1808 ban on participation in international trade, many in the eastern slaveholding states began to sell increasing numbers of slaves to the Deep South. There are many comparisons and contrasts between the play and the short story of Jim Smiley and The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain. For instance, in both play and story the events in happened in the exact same order. First, Jim Smiley is introduced and his character is developed when the narrator explains about his penchant for betting on anything and everything he sees. Then, a stranger comes to town and starts a bet with Jim Smiley that his frog is, in fact, not the best jumper in Calaveras County. Finally, in the end, the stranger cheats and angers Jim when he finds out he had been tricked. In spite of this, the play was different from the story because it did not have the framework that the short story had. In the play there was no part where they show the narrator trying to find out more about Leo. It goes straight to the story and does not add any outer frame; on the other hand, the short story adds other events…

However, these effects can vary greatly, with some species being affected greatly, and others not at all. For example, UV-B radiation can cause the skin of Gray Tree frogs to darken, and cause them to swim less. For others, like the Pacific Tree frog, this radiation can reduce larval survival and increase abnormalities in behavior and development. Other common effects include increased embryo mortality and behavioral avoidance. Interestingly, different populations of amphibian species can be differently affected by UV-B radiation as well, possibly because certain regions have more UV-B radiation than others (Blaustein). Regardless, the fact that UV-B radiation has been increasing in our atmosphere is alarming.…

Hippodrome, ancient Greek stadium designed for horse racing and especially chariot racing. Its Roman counterpart was called a circus and is best represented by the Circus Maximus. The typical hippodrome was dug into a hillside and the excavated material used to construct an embankment for supporting seats on the opposite side. In shape the hippodrome was oblong, with one end semicircular and the other square; it thus resembled a U with a closed top. Seats ran in tiers the length of the arena and along the curve, while at the straight end dignitaries occupied seats above the arena’s offices. A low wall called a spina ran most of the length of the stadium and divided the course. The spina was decorated with monuments and had sculptures that could be tilted or removed to keep spectators…
