I found that really interesting because you get to read and hear Cheryl’s actual experience first-hand. The Pacific Crest Trail reaches from Mexico to Canada on the western coast of the United States. At the beginning of the book Cheryl explains her past and what brought her to her decision of hiking over 2,000 miles. Her mom dying and divorcing her husband were two factors that helped make her decision. As she begins her hike, it is evident that her life is about to change.…

"A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair" certainly is filled with beautiful imagery. I could very easily picture the girl "standing on the ivory bed, loosening her hair, watching the mirror..." The poem also contains metaphors. The speaker refers to the girl as a "lotus blossum" and "a wild goose on the sand." I especially liked line 17, "drop the jade comb-no sound." Maybe this is where the translation differs, because it doesn't read "she dropped the jade comb" or even "drops the jade comb" with the subject understood. The image that I see, however, is a beautiful, heavy jade comb falling on a bed so fluffy, pillowy, and soft that the comb doesn't make a sound. The luxurious bed, the silk curtains, the cherry blossoms just down the steps, and the girl's long, thick, perfumed hair make me visualize a paradise as rich as the imagery itself. It seems the speaker is the one who is "Awake at dawn" as the first line says. "The lotus blossom wakes" in line 8. Perhaps he woke early to go watch this girl whom he admires wake up. Or maybe he is so in love with her that he could not sleep for thinking of her. He was already "Awake at dawn" and couldn't stand being without her any longer so he had to go see…

It seems that Cheryl’s goal in the memoir was to share with the reader that no struggle whether internal or external is too frightening to overcome and this goal was completed by her honest and raw story telling. Personally, her journey on the PCT was inspiring to read but the journey through her life was incredibly moving because it seemed that the internal struggles were actually more agonizing and difficult to overcome than the physical struggles that she faced on the trail. Simply put, the memoir was an inspirational look into a young woman’s life but as first I was taken back by the honesty that Cheryl had with her readers. A theme that I believe was a bit overlooked was Cheryl’s independence and how this independence led her onto the hike. When Cheryl decides to leave her hometown that included all of her friends and her job she didn’t know at that point what the hike would lead her to but she decided to take the risk…

My experience with failure came with athletics. For my whole life I have always been involved in sports like soccer, tennis, basketball. When I was in the fourth grade I joined a swim team and that was the first and really only sport that I stuck with; swimming came naturally to me, and it was something that I could do year round and I loved every minute of it. However, once I was in high school I stopped swimming and joined my high school’s cross country team. My dad was a runner all throughout high school so I thought it would be a good idea to give the sport my father loved a chance. The cross country team allowed me to grow, and I learned things about myself including that fact that I can’t run. It’s not that I can’t physically run, I have…

A time when I failed was towards the end of my school year second semester, when in the tenth grade studying for my Honors Biology class. I studied for hours and hours for my EOC that was coming up ad was very getty about how I was taking responsibility of everything. The day of the test I was For sure that I was going to pass without hesitation. Mistakenly I was wrong and my ego and pride literally dropped to the floor once I received the results. I took it really hard with horrible expectations and outputs of what would happen next and sooner than later, which is never the correct thing of handling any kind of situation, I was beating myself up about it and I thought to myself at the beginning, that I was going to fail. Finally after a while I just shooked it off my shoulders and said to myself, "Look, things happen for a reason. Even though I thought I did well but I didn't, all it means is that I have to just push myself harder and try again. Besides, it can only get better from here!” So again I studied and studied every night like it was my ritual, until I would fall asleep in my books. Days later after all other exams were finished; it was time for me to prepare myself for the retake of my Honors Biology Exam. Though I was sweating from the top of my head and was a nervous wreck because I didn’t know what would exactly happen next, I was able to still pay attention, focus and remember exactly what I had studied. Happily it all paid off after the second time around, and all stress that I had on me was washed away. Though it took me twice to conquer, I was ecstatic a proud of myself. Through the process I learned to not always look for the worst, and instead just keep pushing yourself to the full potential I know I'm destined for. I learned that even real champs have trials and tribulations, but it is never the case to give up and expect the worst to happen. I learned that I am my own biggest critic and only I can hold my self down from succeeding what I want…

We humans, are the most remarkable species on the planet earth. We have travelled vast lands, explored great oceans and settled down creating the greatest race on earth. We evolved with time, with the ambition to reach for the skies and determination to max our full potentials. However, we have been implanted with this code, this idea that the true meaning of life is to be successful and without it your life is meaningless. We are raised with this belief that without success no one will care about your existence. Without success you won’t be able to get a car from a dealer, a credit card from a bank nor respect from the people around you. We chase success so desperately that we lose ourselves in the long run; we become blind to things around us and take everything for granted. With the reading “Self-Reliance” showing us how important it is to keep faith on ourselves and be more confident. On the other hand the idea of “Why Literature” implies that literature inspire our thought in various ways so we can be a critical thinker and make the best decision. Both reading indicated that everyone need to speak up their mind and stand for what they believe in. In the reading “self-reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson the author tells us that we should to be able to keep faith in ourselves and not be afraid to stand out for who we are or what we believe in. It is important to value our ideas and be confident in what we do. In the reading “Why Literature” by Mario Vargas Llosa the author tells us how we chose success over our own individual fulfillment. Whether it be individual fulfillment or believing in yourself, we must not be blind towards success just because the society wants us to breed success. Find the one thing that you like to do, find that one thing which speaks to you and cultivate it. Never chase success, chase the perfection in what you do and success will come…

When you’re all alone in life and it seems like nothing's going your way, you just need to keep being yourself and keep doing your thing, and people will notice how great you are. In the worst most awful time of your life my best piece of advice to you is just keep going, never give up on yourself and the results will surprise you every time. I guarantee it.” Words like this haven’t been told to me many times in my life.
