From The Barrio To The Academy Summary
While reading From the Barrio to the Academy, by Laura Rendon, I made a couple of connections between my journey and that of the author. The first common parallel was about how we had to separate ties with the past to be successful. I’m not really fluent in my language, Vietnamese. I knew way more Vietnamese words when I was a child. While growing up, I kept on learning and practicing English, but I never really practice Vietnamese. I cannot have full on conversations with my grandma or Dad anymore, which is disheartening. My parents always wanted us, their children, to have a better life than they did. They always joked around and talked about how we were going to take care of them when we receive a job.

My expectation was about how I thought college would be a walk in the park because high school was roughly easy for me. I was totally wrong. The exams were not knowledge that I could just listen to during lectures. I actually had to study from the textbooks, review notes,

First off, I really am glad I went to a university instead of a community college. It was the best decision I made because I really love it here at Iowa State. I did not think I was this way, but I like meeting new people and building a friendship. Sometimes, I don’t even want to go back home because I rather be at Iowa State. I am always staying up late, either to study or finish my assignments. At the beginning, I was so discouraged because I failed my first exam. I never failed a test before and I was mad at myself. It gave me motivation to do better, and I have not failed any exams so

The sadness that comes with saying goodbye to the friends you have spent your whole life with when moving is never easy. Throughout my education, I have moved schools 3 times and every time it has been a struggle to acclimate socially, mentally and academically. I started at Diegueno Middle School in the middle of the seventh grade. This was now my second school in only the first half of my first year of middle school. Again I had to adapt to new people and a different course load. This school had a much higher standard of academia then my prior school and at first, I struggled. School felt alien to me. Time passed and I made new friends and I got used to the difficulty. I started high school with the same group of friends from middle school…

College is hard enough for those who are ambitious, however; those who do not want to be there it is almost impossible. One writer states, “I’ve known students who were brilliant but were either incapable of performing the tasks necessary to succeed in required courses or were perhaps unwilling to do so.” (Sobel). The transition from high school to college is a new chapter, because it allows students freedom they have never experienced before. Most new college students cannot understand the realities of living a college life and will not be able to react to the new environment.…

My classes were intimidating on the first day, but now that we have had many classes I am comfortable. I am using my time management skills everyday because I have many meetings to attend. Overall, I am glad I choose to continue my education at UW-Platteville because it feels like home.…

College is much different from my high school in so many ways. In my high school we was always on the same routine. We had four periods a day and first period started at 7:45 and we was on a block schedule meaning our classes was an hour and thirty minutes long. We had the same classes everyday so more learning during the day and less homework. Immediately after school we had football practice four days a week and played on Fridays. High school Is a good preparation for college, even though while in high school you will never expect what happens in college. In high school your parents were more involved in what go on in your daily life, whether you get in trouble in class or you get sick at lunch.…
