On first impression while reading Ishmael, the fact a gorilla is teaching the reader about the human race is almost insulting. At second glance however, one realizes the primate has a better perspective on human action. Always viewing our civilization from afar, he is able to notice certain aspects of our nature that are so natural to us; we are blind to their destructiveness. Although some of Ishmael's analogies may seem far-fetched, the points he makes with them are frighteningly true.…

In the poem “Harlem ( A Dream Deferred)” by Langston Hughes, he talks about dreams; dreams that society has, dreams that he has. Not a dream that you have while you're sleeping but a dream that you have and want to pursue. He addresses the questions of what happens when a person's dreams are destroyed. The author uses a lot of visual, descriptive language to try and show that nothing good can come from not achieving your dreams. For example, he compares not realizing a dream to the stench of rotten meat, which suggest the consequence is negative. None of the language in the poem reflects anything positive about a dream deferred.…

As soon as she arrived she went straight to the kitchen to see if the monkey was there. It was: what a relief! She wouldn't have liked to admit that her mother had been right. “Monkeys at a birthday?” her mother had sneered. “Get away with you, believing any nonsense you're told!” She was cross, but not because of the monkey, the girl thought; it's just because of the party.…

Langston Hughes's poem "Dream Deferred" is basically about what happens to dreams when they are put on hold. Hughes probably intended for the poem to focus on the dreams of African-Americans in particular because he originally entitled the poem "Harlem," which is the capital of African American life in the United States; however, it is just as easy to read the poem as being about dreams in general and what happens when people postpone making them come true. Ultimately, Hughes uses a carefully arranged series of images that also function as figures of speech to suggest that people should not delay their dreams because the more they postpone them, the more the dreams will change and the less likely they will come true.…

In “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, we can relate this quote from the song Away From the Sun by 3 Doors Down relates to Piggy. Piggy is one of the two characters who stay civilized even though everyone else starts to turn to their natural savage state. “I’m over this/ I’m tired of living in the dark/ can anyone see me down here” (”Away from the Sun”). Piggy comes to the realization that most people have turned into their natural savage state. He feels no one acknowledges his ideas or opinion. In this song they talk about how they overcome the state of loneliness; loneliness being the monster.…

Something that everyone would like but will probably never come true. This statement is an excellent attention getter. It tells about a dream that everyone would like without singling out any group of people to blame for the dream not coming true. Then as the poem goes on he gets more and more specific. Hughes then goes on to dream that everyone “Will know sweet freedoms way,/Where greed no longer saps the soul.” (World lines 6-7) Here Hughes is wishing to abolish greed. He is hoping that not only the rich will be able to know what it is truly like to be free. Hughes goes on to…

There are not many privately owned chimpanzees in the country — a census conducted for the Great Ape Project, an advocacy group, puts the number at about 225 — but there are many thousands of pet primates. Regardless of primates’ species or size, the people who keep them as pets seem to have a remarkably consistent way of looking at them. Even Bob, who condemns what he sees as Ms. Herold’s irresponsible sentimentality for permitting an adult chimpanzee to roam free so often (“she was delusional,” he says, “she anthropomorphized the primate to such a degree that he was more human than chimpanzee”), can’t help but acknowledge the unusually strong connection.…
