The capital investment in municipal water-treatment facilities totals about 250 billion, and the annual cost of operating them is roughly 5 billion. Some 2 billion is spent annually in capital improvement of the facilities. Even so, the cost of drinking water remains low, still well under a dollar a ton, or about one cent for more than 150 eight-ounce glasses. Estimates are that meeting the costs of repairs, upgrades, and the construction of new facilities, coupled with the supporting infrastructure, will approach 140 billion (CEQ, 1998)…

Research conducted for over the past decade has led the parties to believe that the future of the water supply necessitates this movement. As stricter measures are expected for future city water standards, some wells in the area, which cannot accommodate treatment facilities due to space constrictions, have already been closed due to their output quality. Large, but still legally safe, amounts of Boron, calcium, and magnesium and other dissolved minerals in the groundwater effect taste, smell, and water hardness. Salt is added during treatment to improve the water’s aesthetics, (Water Environment Research, p. 347), (www.ehow.com). Recent changes to regulations will require the cities “greatly reduce the total dissolved solids (TDS) of their water supply as a means of meeting future wastewater discharge requirements,” (www.wdcwa.com, p. 6-7). Not only is this method of water treatment hard on the environment, it is not cost effective. Studies have shown that the available water output from local aquifers may be limited and is unlikely to sustain the growing…

Background: According to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012, 783 million people, or 11 per cent of the global population, remain without access to an improved source of drinking water. Also the United Nations has long been addressing the global crisis caused by insufficient water supply to satisfy basic human needs and growing demands on the world’s water resources to meet human, commercial and agricultural needs (un.org). In this experiment water quality and contamination of groundwater was investigated. First, I observed the effects that many pollutants have on groundwater. I predict that in this experiment the oil and vinegar will create the large amount of contamination in the water, while the laundry detergent will just create an aroma smell to it. Considering the smells and color to these ingredients I think that it will cause the water quality to have a bad smell and cause the water to be very cloudy. Once filtering the contaminated water, the water will be clear and purified. Second, I will experiment water treatment and filtering. I predict that once the contaminated water is treated and filtered that it will leave me with less contamination or none at all. Then for the last experiment, I will determine the difference between bottled water and tap water to discover any contamination. I predict that the tap water will be the most contaminated and with the most chemicals in it, while the bottled waters; Dasani and Fiji will be completely filtered and free of any chemicals.…

The secondary treatment consists of putting in microorganisms to consume the dissolved waste. The advanced treatment consists of filtrating and disinfecting the water. In between each of these three steps, we conducted several tests to test for key factors that determined whether or not the water is clean. We tested for pH, ammonia concentration, turbidity, and COD. Turbidity measured suspended particles in the water and the clarity of the water. COD stands for chemical oxygen demand and measures the amount of dissolved oxygen that would be removed from the water to react with pollution. In our end results, the water passed all four-test regulations and was indeed clean water. The pH of clean water should be between 6.0 and 9.0 and ours was 6.17. The ammonia concentration was no limit, but our concentration was very low at .18 mg/L. The turbidity levels in clean water should be less than 4 FAU and ours was 0.39 FAU. The COD levels…

In 1996 the city of Cleveland began a $750 million Plant Enhancement Program. The program’s goal was to renovate and modernize the city’s four water treatment facilities, which are among the 10 largest in the US, and were built in 1856; over 500 million gallons of water are pumped to Cleveland residents daily. In the following paper I attempt to provide with an overview of the Baldwin Water Work Plant Enhancement Program (PEP) (one of the four water treatment facilities) scope, time plan, costs, and objectives; describe the program’s life cycle stages required to execute all projects involved; indentify and analyze the possible associated risks, and present the respective risk responses; define the controlling and monitoring process of the program; indentify and analyze the framework items of the program’s plan that were critical to reach key achievements.…

Conformity and Individualism have been foes for longer than most can remember, dating back the Renaissance when the new spirit of individualism swept through the Italian peninsula. It seems as though history repeated itself in the United States about 530 years later. The conflict between conformity and individualism is obviously displayed through the elements of the setting in John Updike’s “A&P” exhibiting the upcoming era of social issues and, the small town and grocery store representing a microcosm of the whole population of the United States.…

Experiments were done on the water quality and the contamination of groundwater. First, I observed the effects that different pollutants had on groundwater. I predicted that the experiments with the oil and vinegar would create the most contaminations to the water. When the laundry detergent were mixed with the groundwater, it created a light green color with a pleasant smell. The second water treatment experiment were about filtering techniques to remove contaminants from water. I predicted to drain the water by removing all the contaminants by using a funnel to purify the water. The last experiment were performed using Dasani, and Fiji bottled water and Tap water to determine the quality of drinking water. I also predicted that tap water would leave the least amount of contaminants and the Fiji bottled water would have the most contaminants.…

Currently, the tank farm water supply at the Training and Development Centre is plagued with a series of issues which is preventing the base from having a regular supply of water when there is cessation of pipe borne water from the Water and Sewage Authority (WASA) to supply to the facility. This problem impacts on the efficient running of the base. With the increase of human resource on the station this issue creates a health hazard to the base. Areas such as the Galley and Heads are adversely affected by this lack of steady water…

This report aims to discuss and to enrich the reader 's knowledge on the proper desludging and disposal of waste accumulated from septic tanks. The information gathered here is vital as it provides a culture of awareness to everyone on how wastewater is disposed of. Wastewater comes from everywhere; from our residences to our workplaces, even public places. Filipinos as we are, have been known to be hygienic yet we know little of what happens when our used water is flushed to the drain until it 's carried off to treatment plants. It is imperative that we, as citizens, must have an idea on how the whole process works and how beneficial/ detrimental it is to the people and to our environment.…

The film was all about different controversies surrounding Rizal and the highlight was the Retraction Controversy. Did Rizal, in his last few days, ever wrote a letter withdrawing his attacks to the Catholic Church? If he did, what could have driven him to write that? The retraction letter is really controversial because if Rizal did write that, it would turn out that he does not deserve to be called a hero after all. The film makes me feel like I am in the Hispanic time because of the black and white feature. But this did not bring me to sleep because of the film’s humor that balanced a very serious topic: The Retraction Controversy. It was not an ordinary film about Rizal’s heroic life and suffering like many directors and filmmakers have done before. I salute every brains behind the film, for going beyond the normal and for making me see that Rizal is not that godly since he also had unrevealed secrets and unsolved controversies just like any human. He could have been inconsistent with his ideals because if not, controversies like this would not arise. His alleged inconsistencies made him a “Bayaning Third World”. I even think Rizal would agree as him being a “marupok”, he was just like any of us who had weaknesses and didn’t want to be perceived as god-like. The characters show that they respect their elders. Dr. Jose Rizal show this to his elder sisters Narcissa and Trining, to his elder brother Paciano, and to his mother. In spite of oppression by the Spaniards to the Filipino people, the director showed in the characters of Ricky Davao and Chris Villanueva as film makers that the Filipinos are joyful. In the characters of Dona Theodora (also called Dona Lolay), Trining, and Narcissa being God-fearing was shown by going to the church to attend the mass, and by performing the rosary. The family of Rizal sent him to school. Rizal has strong value of this because he made sure that he will finish Medicine. He didn’t just study here…
