Full House Communication Analysis

The two shows The Middle and Full House each has episodes that focus on adults going back to school. The focus is on one of the main protagonists of each show, in The Middle it is Frankie Heck that goes back to school and in Full House it is Jesse that returns to high school. It attempts to sensitize the audience’s view of adults returning to school; to improve their quality of life as seen in The Middle, and to change one’s life from a decision made in the past that he/she regretted as seen in Full House. In these episodes we see ideologies, setting, debunking of stereotypes, cultural values, universal values and non-verbal communication being utilized in order to effectively send their respective messages to the audience.
The Middle is
DeVito, refers to a fact about oneself that is unknown to others but known to oneself. According to the sitcom Full House, Jessie was a high school dropout but his family did not know about it.
A theory employed in the both sitcoms was intrapersonal skill. This theory deals with the communication one has within themselves. In Full House, Jessie’s secret allowed him to think about the consequences of his decision in high school. While in The Middle this theory can be seen when Frankie contemplated on her future after she had been fired and returned to school and the difficulties she would endure.
Interpersonal skill and small group communication are the other theories portrayed in the sitcoms. These theories are linked since they both refer to the act of communicating among other persons (DeVito). In Full House, interpersonal skill and small group communication is seen, the family comes together to discuss Jessie’s dilemma of being a high school dropout and offering advice on ways to overcome it. In Full House Jessie communicated with his family the reason why he can not help DJ with her campaign. Also, the family communicated with Jessie in order to support him by expressing their concerns for him. In The Middle, Frankie communicated her reason of going back to school in order to better herself and her family to her husband.
The last theory is self-disclosure which is a type of communication in which a person reveals information about themselves that is usually kept hidden (DeVito), which is seen in Full House. In Full House, self-disclosure occurred when Jessie finally admitted of being a high school dropout to his family and friends by saying “I cant help DJ with her stay in school campaign because I didn’t stay in school, I’m a
