Typically I do not think deeper about what my role in changing the lives of those around me might become beyond the patients I treat at the hospital; yes, I do have some ideas such as Doctors Without Borders and similar organizations, but beyond that my exploration is nonexistent. A large part of my experience with Honors is going to be dedicated to finding exactly what I am going to do in my life that is going to serve those around me both now as well as in the future. Frankl expressed the importance of helping others himself when he tells of his time working in the sick bay. He makes the point that, although you may be struggling helping others is still extremely crucial because they may be suffering too; and often far worse. There will be times in life that we experience obstacles like those in the previous paragraph, it is during times such as these that we can gain the most from helping others while observing the impact that we make in their lives. The time that each individual is blessed with on Earth is about much greater things than how nice of a house you own, what cars you drive, and where you vacation; it is about the legacy that you leave after your time is far over. Frankl touches on the idea that each individual controls their own destiny; “Everything can be taken away from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” (p.66) this quotation describes Honors perfectly. Throughout my time in the program I will be guided down my path by advisers, professors, and professionals to my goal of obtaining my degree, going to medical school, and becoming a practicing anesthesiologist. My life will be full of guidance and instruction, but what it all boils down to is that I am responsible for all of the decisions that I make as I go through my journey in life. I will face a plethora of different individuals whom make different decisions and have varying points of view and it will be my job alone to decide who I will let influence me and who I will view as a role model. I can be given every tool in the world to put into my toolbox but I must first open it in order to receive and make use of anything. As my years pass while in the program I will be challenged to experience new things and think in new ways, just like this novel has required of me. Even more so than in previous years I will be completely in charge of my future and what becomes of it. Upon the completion of reading this novel, I am thinking from a new, open perspective on my time in the Honors
