Field of Dreams, a film production directed by Phil Alden Robinson, is an enduring classic of its time that delves into the idyllic nature of baseball. The director’s subtle inclusion of diegetic sounds, depth cues, and the Kuleshov’s effect brings together a polished masterpiece that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. In the film, the spirit of Doctor Archibald Graham refuses to return to Iowa with Ray despite his dreams of playing professional baseball. “Sixty-five years [before], for five minutes, [he] had come [so] close, it would kill [most] men to get so close to their dream and never touch it.” Graham chooses his present over his past and adamantly insists that “batting in the major league” is not written in his destiny. He will not leave Chisholm for it is his “most special place in the world.” His duty as a physician feels more fulfilling for “if [he’d] gotten to be a doctor for [only] five minutes… [that] would have been a tragedy.” In fact, Graham willingly accepts his fate and concedes that his sacrifice for the greater good has not been in vain.…

In the movie “Bernie”, we follow the story and between a Carthage, Texas funeral director Bernie Tiede, and his co-dependent relationship with a wealthy widow, Marjorie Nugent. As “Bernie” unfolds, we see the companionship turn for the worse as Ms. Nugent’s ill-temper causes Bernie to snap – and lands her dead in her freezer. As stated in the text, “One day when we had come to a stop, a worker took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into a wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs. The worker watched the spectacle with great interest” (Wiesel 100). This man was a non-Jewish man who could have done something to help the prisoners, but instead he made the situation worse by throwing this piece of bread. This man was “free” of Nazi mistreatment, yet he was imprisoned by Hitler’s motives and strong personality. This caused him to betray his fellow Europeans. Wiesel says, “On the way we saw some young German girls. The guards began to tease them. The girls giggled. They allowed themselves to be kissed and tickled, bursting with laughter. They all were laughing, joking, and passing love notes to one another” (46). The girls saw the suffering of the Jews, yet all they cared about was flirting. They may have been friends with some of these people, but chose to ignore them. Even there was not much they could do as only a few people they could have told others about the suffering they had witnessed and convinced people to stand up to Hitler and the…

Similarly, McTeigue demonstrates how the corruptive nature of men, amplified by power causes destructive historical cycles through his allegorical film V for Vendetta. Like the Handmaid’s Tale, V for Vendetta sets in a fascist police state run by the Norsefire party, an allusion to the Nazi party of WWI. Here, control is extremely practiced as their government “uses lies to hide the truth,” euphemising its objectives and hyperbolising on “war, terror, disease… conspired to rob common sense” and “coercive their conformity.” The “enunciation of truth” behind their reconstructed media is revealed when side protagonist Evey, plunges into V’s “shadow gallery,” an allusion of the Handmaid’s “oasis of the forbidden.” It was soon disclosed that the…
