A paragon for this transfer of support is my involvement in planning the Kansas Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Summer Leadership Conference. The first duty of the Kansas State Parliamentarian is to coordinate this statewide conference for all Kansas local chapters. During my first year in office, the vice president on my officer team mentored me throughout the organizational
process: asking for my opinions and giving me carte blanche with certain facts of the planning process. In the end, the conference went splendidly; that next year I had the confidence to repeat the process independently. However, a new vice president had taken office - and to facilitate a growing leadership - I needed to give her the chance to learn conference-planning skills. It was during those long months of preparation for the conference that I developed a leadership style of teaching through example and encouragement. It was often difficult to let go of my personal plans for the conference and permit her to control certain elements. However, hindsight, I can see that by cultivating a cooperative environment, the project reached its fullest potential.
Overall, while I am largely satisfied with my success in the competitive events aspects of FBLA, it is uncomparable to my appreciation for the opportunities in my state officer position. Specifically the instances - like the summer conferences - that provided me a new skill as well as spread to facilitate growth in others.
