Policing in the Future
Policing in the future has many exciting advancements to be made in technology such as facial recognition, thermal and infrared sensors, and night vision just to name a few. Augmented reality systems are systems that are designed to present digital information to users on what they are look at in reality (The Pennsylvania state university, 2012)
Another aspect of future policing is predictive policing.
The new technologies of future policing provide a number of invaluable uses. Facial recognition would allow law enforcement to identify criminals in real time through facial recognition matched criminal databases, wanted posters, …show more content…
This could help when criminals are running and officers are in pursuit. These sensors would make it easier for officers finding criminals on foot (Pearsall, 2010). Another advance in technology would be night vision. Night vision could aid police officers that are in pitch black conditions providing a Hugh tactical advantage. This type of technology could help officers in night searches. Some other examples of future policing advancements in technology such as shared video feeds which could provide incident command with a direct view of an officers position and see what the officer is seeing. Back up in units could also retrieve live feeds of the danger zone and adjust their position accordingly (Pearsall, 2010). Officers could also use patrol car operator data and regional traffic management information on a heads- up display to make driving safer and more efficient especially in pursuit and rapid response units (Couper & Buerger, …show more content…
The greatest benefit to predictive policing is the discovery of new or previously unknown pattern and trend (Pearsall, 2010). The police must ha pattern and trend that law enforcers can not only relate to but can follow with direct orders. The officers must have training to enforce proper policies. It is very important to have a predictive policing plan in action (Pearsall, 2010).
In the current economic climate police departments are being asked to do more with less. Predictive policing is believed to be the next era in policing. The law enforcement community is known for its openness to innovations. As a result of this openness to change many eras have emerged throughout police history (Pearsall, 2010).
In the future of policing many changes will be made some will be accepted by the community and some will not. The rapid advances in technology will provide the police with a better view and most of all a higher apprehension rate. Predictive policing helps officers plan for the changes that need to take place. These are all things that are needed and will have a great influence on the future of
