I'm a dually-licensed clinical social worker, and I'm currently living abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. I will be starting a web development boot camp through Le Wagon in July, and this endeavor and past interests in the topic are causing me to think about the impact of future technology on the most vulnerable in our society.
It's no mystery that the workforce will impacted as technology improves. While opinions are mixed about how exactly different industries will be affected, the changes will likely impact those in poverty or with low SES--the people social workers work hardest to protect. However, I have seen little discussion of this issue in the current social work discourse.
While it might be difficult to face this reality given
the current reality for many--little wage growth and a shrinking middle class--social workers must be working today to prevent a potentially worse situation in the future.
One possible solution to this is a guaranteed minimum income. The fight for a $15 minimum wage has been a prominent rallying point, the guaranteed income could stave off problems that might happen just a little bit after the issues we are facing now. I think this is something social workers need to start thinking about now.
I look forward to hearing from you.
