Dr. Johnnella E. Butler’s speech on liberal arts education and becoming a global citizen opened my mind to all the responsibilities I obtained after choosing to attend Spelman College. I have set a few goals for myself that I intend on completing and improving throughout my four years. These goals consist of time management, striving for all A’s, staying on top of my assignments and becoming a freethinking women. Throughout New Student Orientation we learned the importance of freethinking and liberal arts education. This freedom is beneficial to my education and can help me accomplish my goals.
Johnnella Butler brought this idea to my mind with her words, “…liberal arts now means the course of study to provide the general knowledge and intellectual skills needed to negotiate the world as in preparation for professional or occupational skills.” A liberal arts education is a great opportunity that should be taken into advantage. Just like Butler said, “Spelman College is a liberal arts and sciences college, and the education that a liberal arts and sciences education (liberal education) provides, prepares you to engage the world about you, to be responsible to understand and make better the human condition. It is important to know what it means to take full advantage.” During these next four years I need to prepare myself for “the real world” and my career. I am an aspiring Early Childhood educator and I wish to teach pre-school to fifth grade. If I want to reach these goals I need to take the necessary steps now in order to accomplish my aspirations. Spelman College does not only teach out of textbooks, we learn through experience and the choices we make every day. It is solely up to me to self motivate myself, get involved, and work to my fullest potential.
