The Northern armies reigned victorious, and the rebelling states were returned to the Union. Since the start of the war, the Union devised a strategy. They planned to blockade the South and drive on the Confederate capital. Even though organizing it took about four years, it was the single strategy that won the war. Lincoln and Grant cooperated well.…
Grant led his troops to a win at Fort Henry then to a win at Fort Donelson. Soon then Grant got the nickname “Unconditional Surrender Grant” in 1862 because at Fort Donelson the Union got their first major victory against the South. At battle of Vicksburg, Grant would led a gruesome assault and surrounded the city to capture the city. Grant finally got the jump on the South by surrounding the city.…
By using the variables, METT-TC, leaders are able to visualize, direct, and execute an operation. Preceding the Battle of Shiloh, the Union Commanders did not accurately analyze the mission variables that would have allowed them to prepare for the operation. However, once the Confederates executed their attack, the Union defended their position, studied the situation and, in the end, accomplished their mission. At one point during the battle, Grant’s troops’ mission was to hold their defensive position, also known as the Hornet’s Nest, at all costs. After reinforcements arrived, they were able to clearly define another critical task and purpose. Beauregard’s Confederate troops were taken by surprise when Union columns assaulted them the morning of April 7, 1862. After hours of intense, bloody fighting, Beauregard ordered a retreat to Corinth (Sword). Although, they were not expecting the Confederates to conduct an offensive attack on them, the Union adapted their mission and it was inevitably…
Ulysses S. Grant makes Robert Lee surrender through war. Grant makes his army tear down buildings and torch them. His army is ruthless and undefeated taking down any threat there is and then he took down Lee. On April 7, 1865 Grant sent a letter to Lee that says “The result of last week must convince you of the hopelessness of further resistance.…
Grant’s leadership tactics and battle strategies were not only adequate, but they were remarkable. At first, Lincoln disagreed with Grant’s plan to siege Vicksburg. Even though Lincoln did not agree with Grant’s plan, Grant continued because he thought he knew best and did what he thought would win the North Vicksburg. Grant’s plan was to surround Vicksburg and cut of all supplies. While doing this, they would continuously move in closer and closer and keep firing on the city. “...Vicksburg is so strong by nature and so well fortified that sufficient force cannot be brought to bear against it to carry it by storm against the present Garrison. It must be taken by a regular siege or by starving out the Garrison.” (Grant, 1). This six week siege proved to be effective when Vicksburg surrendered and Grant and the Union won the…
The war was largely fought in the eastern portion of the country. The majority of Americans lived in this region as well. People experienced the war, and its cost, first hand. The war opened with the firing on Fort Sumter and ended with the surrender at a courthouse in Appomattox, Virginia. This region was the most developed in the nation and saw a massive movement of men and material across the main fronts. Invasions and forays into enemy territory were common due to the proximity to the enemy. The North focused on taking the South capitol city, Richmond. The South mainly fought to organize and prove themselves able to resister the invaders of their territory.…
April 2,1865 Grant continued the siege of Petersburg. Lee and his troops defended the town, but sickness, casualties and desertion weakened them. Finally the Confederate line broke and Lee withdrew from defending the town. From the beginning of the horrible war, the Union’s goal was to capture the Confederate capital in Richmond. Petersburg had been the last roadblock in Grant’s path.…
Before the civil war happened, the northern army was a small army, when crisis came volunteers came to protect their land and freedoms if threatened. the souths army was only made up of white men, while the norths army was made of foreign people who came from different countries, white men and eventually blacks after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. As the war continued the army only had five major goals. The armies’ major goals were to block the southern coasts, capture and control the Mississippi River, capture the Souths capital Richmond, destroying Atlanta and Savannah, and break the southern spirt. With blocking the southern coast, it would prevent foreign power, leaving the south to fight on their own. When the northern captured…
In 1864 General Grant had devised a plan of a Total War strategy. This was to be the straw that broke the rebel camel’s back. For General Sherman’s part he was to cut a path from Atlanta to Savanah and then move into South Carolina. Total War would mean destroying anything of military value after taking what was needed to supply the Union army.…
Grant's army made our beloved soldiers unable to hold the fort and by mid afternoon our soldiers began to evacuate the the city. Before that Grant has stormed some of our other strongholds. He had taken over the Mississippi on July,4 in 1863 earlier in the war after the battle of Gettysburg. Another attack on our independence was at Vicksburg and the only reason we lost was because are reinforcements were blocked by the Unions navy. He surrounded us and a 6 week siege began at Vicksburg.…
William Tecumseh Sherman was an American soldier, businessman, educator and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was a renowned general and received commendation for his outstanding command of military strategy, as well as being criticised for his harshness of the “scorched earth” policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the South. Sherman’s attitude to war and his implementation of the strategy of total war were vital in the defeat of the Confederacy.…
It started in the morning of July 21, 1861 when General Irvin McDowell made 12,000 troops march to Bull Run. They finally got there at 9:30 A.M. Then they fought. After a whole day of fighting, the Union finally retreated. General Beauregard was also in the Battle of Shiloh, Siege of Corinth, the First Battle of Fort Wagner and many more. Finally in the April of 1865, he surrendered to Union in North Carolina. General Beauregard was the cat's pajamas for the Confederates.…
In the spring of 1861, decades of simmering tensions between the northern and southern United States, over issues including states' rights versus federal authority, along with westward expansion and slavery, exploded into the American Civil War. The Civil War broke out because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states, feuding over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not become states just yet. When Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860, he was the first Republican president pledging to keep slavery out of the territories (McPherson, “A Brief Overview of the American Civil War”). Seven slave states in the Deep South seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America. According to an article in the Civil War Daily Gazette, it is said that Southern General Robert E. Lee was actually against succession, but he was dedicated to fighting for his home state of Virginia (“Robert E. Lee’s Letter Against Secession”). Battles broke out across the North and the South, and many lives were lost. Alabama was the site for about 7 of these Civil War battles, including the Battle of Mobile Bay and the Battle of Selma. With the Civil War being fought so close to home, it is understandable why the…
General Robert Lee led the Confederate army and due to the continued victories, he decided to take the battle to the North. Lee set out for the South to win the war. The Union army was led by General George Meade. General Lee’s army traveled up through Maryland and into Pennsylvania to meet the Union army. In July of 1863, there were Confederate soldiers who wondered in to Gettysburg searching for shoes since there was a shoe shortage in the South.…
General Longstreet was to attack the left flank of the union, however, that failed because the Union used cannons on them before General Longstreet could get his men ready. The Confederates attacked the Union with cannons as did the Union to the Confederates. In the early afternoon the fighting had stopped. Later the Confederates began to attack again by bombarding the Union with their cannons.…
