The author de Las Casas clearly tries to show a common theme that exists throughout the document, which is violence and extreme cruelty measures. He tries to appeals to the readers through his emotional and detailed description of events and people and refers to several vindictive terms and sentences such as “butchering” of women and babies and “Boil there, you offspring of the devil!” In contrast, he describes the Native Indians as very “subservient” and “pristine.”…
In both stories of “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by O’Connor, similarities and contrasts exist in their literacy forms. The characters in both stories are also comparable, although diverse at certain points. Several of the similarities ranges from foreshadowing, character simulation, and even the setting is similar since it envies' and harbor criminal incidences (O’Connor, 121). Characters have similar qualities that originate them advance their heinous acts. It’s evident when the two stories culminates with the unwarranted deaths of innocent individuals i.e. grandmother in cold blood and the Clutters by O’Connor’s story.…
In Garcia’s study, she points out the different experiences that Latina girl’s and their mothers went through in terms of housework and outside labor. Mothers, for example, did paid labor outside the home and saw it as a necessity to being a good mother. Young Latina’s, however, often worked the “second shift” as well as their current job. This “second shift” is a term that was “introduced by sociologist Arlie Hochschild to describe the additional and unpaid labor done by some family members when they arrive from work.”(413) Some of these unpaid job duties include grocery shopping, cooking, running errands, household work and caring for the children. Latina mothers believed that working outside the home was essential to being a good mother as it allowed them to financially contribute to the family whether they were single or married women.…
Lopez was a Portuguese Jew who converted to Christianity and lived in England. He served as the Queen’s physician, and was accused of conspiring with Spanish civilians to murder the queen. He claimed that he was innocent and only cooperated with the Spanish in order to reveal their dangerous intentions. Lopez was found guilty nonetheless, and was executed. Kaplan brings original documents from the time of the execution, and claims that they prove that Lopez was convicted because he was Jewish. The conviction documents compare Lopez to Judah who betrayed Jesus, and state that Lopez cannot be…
Death is a word associated with loss, grief and sadness, but in the novel In the Time of the Butterflies we see death in a whole new perspective; martyrdom. Strong, independent, caring, honest, and having firm beliefs are all characteristics we see in a martyr especially in Patria. In the novel we explore the wonders of Julia Alvarez’s writing and get to witness Patria as a martyr and an individual who fought for the right of women against a dictator: Trujillo.…
In reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz, there is a large emphasis imposed on both male and female gender roles of the Dominican Republic. Gender roles are social and behavioral norms that, within a specific culture, are widely considered to be socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. However in this book, it is apparent that there is an extreme machismo attitude that is expected of men from the Dominican Republic. Consequentially, the women are degraded and are used no more than as a commodity. The book, mainly narrated through Yunior, encompasses many roles of each gender, but most prominently is male machismo. Machismo is defined as a strong sense of masculine pride, or exaggerated exertion of masculinity, or male-like qualities. It is derived from the Spanish word macho, literally meaning male or masculine, and through time it has come to be the defining characteristic for males in Latin America (Machismo and the Dominican Republic). Sadly, machismo falls under an umbrella term that ultimately justifies all acts by males, including what they say, think and more importantly how they distinguish themselves as men. Although the book takes place in Paterson, New Jersey, there is still an intense feeling of machismo in many of the male characters in the book. While machismo allows a man to define himself, it is evident that in the process, the importance of females are degraded and are depreciated in turn.…

Mike Males, in “Stop Blaming Kids and TV,” inscribes government officials have blamed today’s media on the acts of kids and young adults, how the impact of violence, drug, and alcohol abuse can ruin children’s lives. Parents need to notice that their own behavior has a major influence on their children’s lives and futures. He makes strong statements that the media does not influence adolescent violence, drug, and alcohol abuse. He supports his opinion with many examples including the comparison of television violence and real actual violence. Males notes, “Kids will witness at least 200,000 acts of television violence by the time her or she are completing high school.”…
In contrast, Jose Gonzalez in my opinion probably operated from a place of personal power through arrogance because he knew he has tenure with the college. I understood his need for the additional help the graduate assistants provided him grading of the papers. However, if everyone was using the graduate assistants in the same manner then maybe there would be no need to change. However, because there was no policy it leaves the college vulnerable to legal actions due to possible misunderstandings. In addition, I felt Jose exhibited coercive power when he sent out the memo in an attempt to be undertone in alerting the college of his disapproval of the policy and possible threat to appeal if required. In my opinion, if Jose has tenure then he may have the respect of Helen’s superior’s which would make Jose her unofficial boss. I know it isn’t fair, but life isn’t always fair. You know it is always that one person in the office that you can’t seem to get around so you learn to adapt and still get the job done. We do not know enough from the study to be certain, but if Jose the dean and vice president are more than friendly his sending out the memo was his…
Revised Thesis statement: In the novels Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh women's roles are dictated by society's expectations which influence their decisions and actions…
In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Marquez contrasts the vocal piety of the characters with the immorality of their actions in the small Colombian town of Sucre in 1951. Marquez uses metaphors and biblical allusions comparing Santiago Nasar to Jesus in order to illustrate the moral hypocrisy conflicting with the apparent self-righteousness of the Vicario twins and Angela Vicario.…
What would the world be like without equality? Women today are starting to feel to be empowered and anything they set their eyes on is possible just with hard work and determination. Even though this is true, women are still endure to be called the weaker sex in certain societies showing that sexism still plays a part in today’s society as seen in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s book, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Women in the book reflect not only the extent of women’s internalization of their chain of command or their exploitation but also their diverse expression to this oppressive suppression.…
As you can see, Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of the most important Latin American novels to ever be written. The story depicts the life of what was once an ordinary town in Colombia forever changed by a murder which was inspired by a death of Marquez’s friend. He also displays the dominance men have over women and how the town expects both genders to behave. It is these reasons why I acknowledge why the book is not only of the most important books in Latin American literature, but one of the best ever…
Punched. The many memorabilia and personal trinkets of one of the most famous writers in Philippine literature surprisingly epitomized the exact contradictory, or some will say the exact sentiment, of the lines of the beautiful poem above. The personal touch of the displays in the 2nd floor gallery brought an intimate ambience to the whole exhibit, and it brought to light another aspect of a renowned writer apart from his professional excellence. Jose Garcia Villa is one of the most eminent Filipino writers of all times, and the Rizal Library and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies collaborated to bring to the Ateneo de Manila University a collection of Villa’s books and papers from his own personal library.…
