The last quote that I chose from the novel was on page 231 and it was when Gabriel’s father said “The sooner its done, the better”. Gabriel’s father was saying this because he was having Gabriel shoot his dog, Surrender so he can put it out of its misery so he doesn’t suffer. Surrender had killed a farmer’s goats and the farmer had came outside and shot him. Surrender had not died nut he was severely wounded, the bullet was lodged in his muscle under the spine. Gabriel felt guilty about shooting Surrender but he knew that he could be…
Chapter 20 is called "The Minister in a Maze" because he wants to be able to see his daughter grow up and be apart of her life but then again he doesn't want people to know what sin he has committed. So therefore he is caught between telling the people that he is pearls father but then again not telling them to save his reputation because of how ashamed he…
Have you ever heard a motivational speech and while it was going on you felt so motivated, but when it was over you did not know what to do with yourself? In Beyond Scared Straight, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," and "Can Kids Be Scared Straight?" all three authors try to persuade people to do the right things in a forceful tone, but there are reasons why appeals to fear is not the best motivational force. Some reasons why appeals to fear is not the best motivational force are that people might not get scared, are not afraid of the negative consequences, and do not want to nor know how to change.…
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s Stairway to Heaven, originally titled A Matter of Life and Death, captures a distant interpretation of traditional views of Heaven, Hell, and Judgment. The directors do this by reshaping standard images of Heaven, eliminating Hell and restructuring Judgment. All together this created a vastly different afterlife than was constructed by classic artists such as Dante, and Michelangelo.…
There was also Esther, whom Gabriel invited to one of his sermons. Later on, on an evening when the family was out of town, he ended up having an affair with her. The affair lasted nine days before Gabriel ended it. A couple months later, Esther was pregnant with his child. So Gabriel stole money from Deborah and gave it to Esther so she could go and have her baby. Later, a letter was sent from Esther that she died giving birth, but she named him Royal before she passed. Gabriel watched Royal grow up, and Gabriel and Deborah were in contact with him. One day, Gabriel broke down and he confessed after Deborah asked him that Royal was his blood-son, Gabriel kept it to himself all of these year. In this chapter, Deborah says, “Gabriel, he is your flesh and blood isn't he? (Gabriel agrees) And you sent that girl away with my money out of the box? (Gabriel agrees) Why did you do it? (No response)...Honey, I don't care what other people say, I would have raised that kid up like my own. … Honey, you better pray to God to forgive you. (Gabriel agrees)” Gabriel has sinned and had an affair with Esther and he never said anything nor did he do anything. When he had to reveal it, he had to ask God for…
Hooper's dying words: everyone has a secret sin that is hidden from all others. The veil, he says, is but a symbol of the masks of deceit and sin that separate all individuals from truly facing themselves, their loved ones, and the divine spirit. All individuals wear such a mask, and Mr. Hooper's veil has been only a symbolic reminder of a truth that most are unwilling to admit. Mr. Hooper pays a high price for this lesson: he is feared, misunderstood, and left to live a lonely, solitary life…
Overall, this story represents many people in the world and gives the allusion that most Christian’s are good people, but proves that many have hidden curiosity about the things of the world, and how easily each can be seduced into a path of…
People all around the world may wonder how many sins there are in their religion or others religion. Why don't you come and be saved? Oh, Lamb of God! Why don't you come?” (Hughes 183) The repetition of the phrase “Why don’t you come?” suggests that it is something that Hughes should be doing, and he is being guilt-tripped for not doing it. The phrase “Lamb of God” being capitalized implies that it is a group, and Hughes belongs in that group, and he is doing wrong by not joining that group. The minister plays with Hughes’s emotions by insinuating that he is acting immorally in the eyes of everyone in the church, including God himself. This, combined with the large age gap between him and the adults, causes Hughes feel ashamed of himself for not acting the way everyone believes he…
The meaning of the story is to show the consequence for straying from the light of the Lord and acting corrupt and evil. The story is also meant to most likely give a warning to anyone who wants to challenge the Lord’s power and to show that other’s actions can affect other people. The story also conveys that there is a pinprick of hope. If you do “walk with the Lord,” then you may very well be rewarded and spared.…
This book first began through the main male figure in the book, Nathan Price. Father of four, husband of Orleanna Price, and having been a survivor of World War II, Price has revealed to feel guilty of having survived from the battle and watching his comrades die in battle. Price believed that he cheated death and that God has stained his name as a “coward”. Due to his own onus, Price feels that he should save as many as souls as he can in order to attain forgiveness from God.…
Margaret Laurence's story of The Stone Angel is about the life Hagar Currie an emotionless, stubborn and proud woman. Margaret Laurence uses this stone angel, originally bought by Hagar's father, to embody the qualities of Hagar. These virtues are often identical to those one assumes are possessed by the stone angel and are paralleled many times by Laurence. Throughout the novel, Hagar relives her life through her memories.…
Arthur Dimmesdale, a minister, lives his life under the watchful yet admiring eye of the townspeople of Boston and, as a result, becomes a slave to the public opinion. His sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and they will not forgive him. He is too weak to admit his sins openly and in their entirety. Instead, he allows his parishioners to lift him in their esteem by confessing, in all humility, that he is a sinner: "The minister well knew--subtle but remorseful hypocrite that he was!--the light in which his vague confession would be viewed." (127) They love him all the more for his honest and humble character, and this is Arthur's intent. Even as he plans to run away with Hester four days after their meeting in the forest, he comforts himself with the knowledge that he will give his sermon on predestination on the third day, and thus will leave his community with fond memories of his final exhortation. Arthur's flaw can be found in the fact that he chooses to value the public view above those of Hester, his love, and God, his master.…
