    Matt Taibbi's Griftopia

In my opinion, after reading Matt Taibbi's Griftopia, he does not fit Richard Hofstadter's definition of a "paranoid spokesmen. " Taibbi's illustration of the tangled web weaved between Wall Street and the government is reflective journalism with oppinionnative rants thrown in. His beliefs are clearly separated from quotes and factual explanations of the innards of the American economy. Taibbi displays extreme discontent at times for the government, large banks, and the like but only because his book centers around a proven scam that caused the second largest economic depression in U.S. history. In his Harpers Magazine article, Hofstadter states paranoid writers go out of their way to confound unsubstantiated facts to support their claims. "One of the impressive things about paranoid literature is the contrast between its fantasised conclusions and the almost touching concern with factuality it invariably shows." In Griftopia, Matt Taibbi supports his claims with facts that not only make common sense, but can be supported by outside sources since he is writing about an almost decade-old scandal. Though he often states what are…

On page eight, Rookmaaker talks about how the 1800s in this manner, “Religion was fine as long as it was purely private and did not interfere with the important things in this world, science, philosophy, scholarship, the high arts.” I believe this is practiced even more in our century than his. Many people do not believe in God or Jesus and a lot of today’s definition of “art” supports this. However, there are still some authors and movie directors that not only believe but show this in their work. It is stated in Lewis’s biography that The Chronicles of Narnia, did, in fact, have a Christian theme. The main character portraying this was Aslan, the Lion and the King of Narnia, as he is said to have been a Jesus Christ figure. Another example…

In Jennifer Kursman’s “The Swan: A Fairytale,” Kursman criticizes how American culture favors beauty over character. She explains that American culture forces women to put their looks before their brains. Kursman uses the TV show, The Swan as “ammunition” to prove their point. She believes that our culture states that, “every girl’s dreams should center on the concept of physical metamorphosis.” This explains the disapproving feelings that Kursman finds in our culture and what it expresses about women because she believes that character is more important than “physical metamorphosis.” Emphasizing that even the thought of it is poison for girls or women, she also talks about, “The American dream,” saying that it equals success or beauty, both…

I had intended on going to the vigil Wednesday night (2/8) but much to my dismay, there was no vigil (or I missed it). So instead of attending a diversity event for this paper, I watched a documentary on Netflix called 13th. This film discusses the issue of racism in the United States criminal justice system; specifically relating to how the 13th amendment transformed the view of African Americans from slaves to criminals.…

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli is one of the most eye opening books I have ever read, it will keep you on your toes, make you think, and show you things you have never seen before. Spinelli dosent just drag you through the pages of Stargirl, he sends you running. Stargirl is a book about a girl who isnt like anybody else, she was homeschooled all of her life until her 10th grade year when she showed up at Mica High school and changed everyones lives. I thought the book opens peoples eyes to how self centered someone can be and how they only think about themsleves. When everyone starts ignoring Stargirl for caring for others besides them it shows you how selfish people can be. In conclusion, The book made me think about my actions and better them, made me open my eyes to how people can feel, and how being you is the best thing you can ever do.…

“Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant – in the blink of an eye – that actually aren’t as simple as they seem. The book deals with the smallest components of our everyday lives—the content and origin of those instantaneous impressions and conclusions that spontaneously arise whenever we meet a new person or confront a complex situation or have to make a decision under conditions of stress.…

    Amazing Grace Summary 2

To America, poverty is an issue that is important and one that is emotionally charged. America is a country of prosperity, wealth and abundance, yet, many people find it difficult to pay for their basic assistance without financial support. Living in the wealthiest country, the United States still has a significant portion living in poverty. 36.5 million people live in poverty in the United States (Who is poor?). So what is causing poverty is the question many people asked themselves. Who is the majority living in poverty? What can we as a nation do about poverty? Our children are living in poverty more than adults. “Almost 16% of all children in the U.S. live in poverty. 30% of African American children and over 27% of Hispanic children under age 18 live in poverty” (Kirst-Ashman 247). What is normal? For the children of the South Bronx, living with the pollution, the sickness, the drugs, and the violence is the only way of life many of them have ever known. First try to picture children in a slum where the filth in their homes is just as bad as that which is in the streets. Where prostitution is uncontrolled, the thievery is too common, and murder and death is a daily occurrence. Crack-cocaine and heroin are sold in corner markets, and the eyes of men and women wandering about uselessly in the streets of Mott Haven. Their bodies puncture with disease, disease which seems to control the neighborhood. This is Mott Haven, in New York City 's South Bronx, the outback of this American nation 's poorest congressional district.…
