The element gallium is a byproduct of the production of aluminum and zinc. Most gallium is extracted from the crude aluminum hydroxide solution of the Bayer process. Gallium easily bonds with most metals and is often added to low melting alloys. Gallium has the second largest liquid range of any element and is one of the few materials that are near liquid form. Gallium also expands as it freezes.

But element 85 gives our study a greater depth than has yet been revealed by the already covered elements. What this story shows is that the nationalistic prejudices persist to this day in many respects and that the identity of the “discoverer” of the element very much depends on the nationality of the textbook that one might consult. It is also an element for which the majority of sources give an incorrect account in declaring Corson, MacKenzie, and Segrè as the true discoverers. The account I will detail owes much to the recent work of two young chemists, Brett Thornton and Shawn Burdette, whose 2010 article I have drawn heavily from.…

Mercury's atomic number is 80 and it's atomic mass is 200.59, which is 13.6 times the volume of water. Mercury can only be found in trace amounts of igneous rock and polluted waters. Mercury is used by meterologists. It can be found in tools such as therometers, barometers, and manometers. Mercury is used because, like most metals, mercury attracts heat and pressure. Elemental mercury (Hg), also known as quicksilver, is a unique metal because it is liquid at room temperature. “Mercury’s chemical symbol comes from the Greek word hydrargyrum, which means liquid silver”(Gagnon, 2010). Mercury is commonly found as the mineral cinnabar (HgS), but is rarely found in the elemental form naturally. Mercury tends to alloy easily with many metals called amalgams. Amalgams can be used to extract metals and can be used in dentistry. Mercury exists in three different sources around the world. Manufactured mercury compounds from a laboratory setting, byproducts of mining and refining, and Industrial waste.…
