Gambino Organized Crime

With regards to similarities between the Gambino organized crime family and Al Qaeda terrorist groups the influences in the modern-day world have made the growth of these organizations possible. The technology available today has made it easier for international communication, cell phones, email and the internet expand reach into all corners of the world. The organized crime family can use this technology to arrange drug trafficking, from anywhere in the world to create large profits. Similarly, the Al Qaeda group also uses technology to arrange trafficking of drugs, these profits are used to fund the continued terrorist attacks they carry out in different cities around the world. There is evidence that Al Qaeda and families in the Mafia have
worked together to engage in illicit operations (D’Alfonso, 2014).
Another way in which the groups are similar is that they use their influence and bribery to pay off individuals who are in the position to allow them to get away with illegal operations. Some examples would be customs agents, airport workers, or even government officials. The organizations use bribery to move shipments through boarders, airports, and shipping ports. These payoffs are an essential part of the trafficking operation, whether it is humans or drugs they need individuals to look the other way.
The final similarity we will discuss is the way in which the organizations function with violence. For the Gambino crime family violence is the way in which they control the members of the family, and the individuals with whom they do business. Conversely, the terrorist organization uses violence both to persuade individuals to do participate in the illegal activity, and as the end result of the illegal transactions in which they engage.
